It’s common for people to choose not to be benevolent or sensitive to other people’s feelings, but it carries a personal cost. People who try to suppress their feelings end up acting immoral. There are actually several other dangers to subduing feelings of compassion. It is dangerous to lose compassion or empathy for others because one can lose his/her sense of what’s right or wrong and can justify inhumane actions.…
The poem Ancestors by Peter Skrzynecki is a excellent example of belonging and expresses his feeling of not belonging in his family. The poem presents a series of rhetorical questions which reflects on a dream Skrzynecki has had or is having and what he believes the meaning is. We could deduce from this poem and its use of present tense that the dream is a recurring dream about these vague images of Ancestors and how Skrzynecki is desperately trying to understand their relevance to him. In this dream, the ancestors are unfamiliar to Skrzynecki but give off a very powerful presence to him. They appear to have a message for him, but he can’t hear what it is, they are always pointing at him but never speak so there meaning becomes very mysterious. The use of rhetorical questions gives the poem a dramatic feel and makes the reader feel the same frustration that Skrzynecki feels.…
What intrigued me the most when reading Mother Night, by Kurt Vonnegut, were the quotes. He says things in a way that really make you step back and think. You could almost tell this book’s story by discussing some of the quotes. In Mother Night, apolitical expatriate American playwright Howard W. Campbell, Jr. refashions himself as a Nazi propagandist in order to pass coded messages on to the U.S. generals and preserve his marriage to a German womanвЂâ€their "nation of two," as he calls it. But in serving multiple masters, Campbell ends up ruining his life and becoming an unwitting inspiration to bigots. "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." Vonnegut introduces this as the moral of his book. "There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too." It's never been more true: Left or right, Christian or Muslim, those convinced they're doing violence in service of a higher power and against an irretrievably inhuman enemy are the most dangerous creatures of all. But is Howard really such a bad man? All throughout reading the book, I would ask myself that question. No he doesn’t seem to show much emotion, but doesn’t that in a way seem understandable when you think about all he’s done and seen? If he were to show emotion, he would go crazy. I know I would. Though he does seem to have a conscience, somehow, somewhere, deep down inside he is trapped. Trapped inside of the mess he’s gotten himself into. I think he knows to that there is no way out, so he remains as this man he has pretended to be for so many years. Howard writes his story from a jail cell in old Jerusalem in 1961, while awaiting a fair trial for his war crimes by the republic of Israel. He is has a different guard for different parts of the day and night. One of them is Mengel. You are…

The setting of this story takes place on the planet Prelandra, also known as Venus. This planet consists of many floating islands. The islands are quite beautiful, the clouds are purple and the sky is a golden color, the seawater is green and drinkable, from the distance the water looks like glided glass. The islands are not very stable, and they can shake if water hits the mobile islands. All of the islands are mobile, except the main island, which remains stationary. Maledil, the people's god, forbade them to spend the night on the main island; therefore the inhabitants of Perelandra stay on one of the mobile islands. There are many different types of inhabitants on Perelandra, dragons, exotic fish, possums, and unusual looking birds. Ransom, the books main character, mistook the birds for bat-winged reptiles when he first arrived on Perelandra. The tropical climate provides a pleasant atmosphere on Perelandra, thus allowing the inhabitants to move about freely, basking in the agreeable weather.…
In “Night” written by Elie Wiesel, Elie struggles with his faith. In the beginning of the book Elie’s faith is pure. When Elie was asked why he prays to god, he responded with, “Why did I pray?... Why did I live? Why did I breathe?”(Wiesel 4) Elie’s faith was unbreakable. His faith was so strong as a result of being in a Jewish family and being taught to pray and study Judaism daily. However his faith was put to the test during the Holocaust. Elie starts to doubt his faith by witnessing the amount of cruelty and evil while in the concentration camps. Elie wonders how a god could let such disgusting and cruel actions take place. He is also disgusted by the selfishness and cruelty he sees amongst his prisoners. Elie describes a scenario…

Bradstreet was very upset and angry at the beginning of the story when all of her stuff burnt in the flames because she lost everything. Nothing came out of the fire the same, not even herself. My choice was connections. The reason for that is because I can relate to the one novel and three other launch texts. For example, in Crucible Act 1 people were quick to you without any reason and it’s sad but it still hasn’t changed. And although the Crucible is talking about in the 1962 and were in 2017. All texts were credible because they were so interesting and would leave you hook into the book. Although it was the qualification of the text for example, Eli Wiesel “Night”, she uses so much detail so it makes you have a better and clear understanding in your head. “When I came to the back of the building, I heard a noise coming from a little room next door.” “I went up and saw Idek with a young Polish girl, half naked, on a mattress. “Then…
In the short story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” by Ursula K. Le Guin, the author paints a picture that is ethically controversial. The story shows a small utopian society that is positioned near a glistening sea, it is called Omelas. At the beginning, the people are celebrating an annual event called the summer festival; at the festival, adults play games and there is horse riding for the children. At first glance, Omelas seems like the typical picturesque utopian city, however, underneath all the glamor lies the real truth. At the core of Omelas, a suffering child exists who has been locked in a cage and summoned to live in its own disease.…
