Raven’s Gate
In this game of life, are you more David or Goliath? In his book, Raven’s Gate, Anthony Horowitz tells the story of a special young man, named Matt, who overcomes the odds and stops a terrible curse. Matt is orphaned, he is young, and the odds are not in his favor. In the book of 1Samuel, David was not Israel’s first choice to fight Goliath either. David was considered too small for the job. Through determination, confidence, and courage, Matt proves that he can overcome almost anything. By reading this book, one can learn that anyone can be a David in the battle against the world’s Goliaths.
We first meet Matt as a troubled teenager. He is in trouble for breaking into a warehouse. Given a second chance, he has the opportunity to straighten his life out by moving to a new town. As part of a secret program, Matt is sent to live with a foster family in a town called Lesser Malling. It doesn’t take long for Matt to figure out that something strange is going on in this town. He is determined to get to the bottom of it. He uses his unwavering curiosity to discover some old paperwork from his parent’s accident. His foster family is not honest with him. Matt tries to run away but all the roads lead him back to the farm. He meets a nice man named Tom Burgess. He was a farmer, but also ended up dead by unnatural causes. Before his death, Tom revealed to Matt the words “Raven’s Gate”. At this point in the book, we see Matt’s determination to find out more about Raven’s Gate and the secret that Lesser Malling holds. Just as David was determined to be the one to fight Goliath, Matt is determined to solve the mystery.
Matt tries to research Raven’s Gate on the internet and in the library. The only book that he can find has the chapter about Raven’s Gate torn out. Matt meets a journalist named Richard Cole who eventually helps Matt put together the pieces of the puzzle. He is confident that he can get the answers about Raven’s Gate.

In 1 Samuel 17, David shows how he has trust in God and he knows that he will win. In the beginning of 1 Samuel 17, no one will fight Goliath, so David steps up and says that he will. His brother told him that he was stupid thinking that he could go and kill Goliath. David told him that by the grace of God he will be able to defeat Goliath. His brother knew that he was right and got him ready to fight Goliath. Once he was ready, he approached the Philistine. Goliath told him that he was small, and that he would kill David easily. David replied, “You come at me with sword and spear and battle-ax. I come at you in the name of God-of-the-Angel-Armies, the God of Israel’s troops, whom you curse and mock.” (1 Samuel 17:45)…

McDonalds has always been able to face the challenges that arise when trying to expand to foreign cultures. They have successfully expanded to over a hundred countries, including countries in East Asia. In the book “Golden Arches East” by James L. Watson, he studies different cities and how McDonalds has played a role in their cultures. Three places that he mentioned in his writing were Beijing, Seoul and Japan. They all share similarities in the way the culture was impacted positively and negatively, in society and politically. They have their differences in the way things were dealt with and how the public viewed the American company coming to their countries. In this paper, I will be talking about how McDonalds is involved in the cultural transformation of different cultures, as well as, if they created the trends mentioned or if they just followed the market they had to work with. I will also be covering my beliefs on whether or not what McDonalds got involved in was an American inspired, transnational culture crowding out indigenous cultures.…

Saul was threatened so much that Saul had plotted to kill David. David learned of this and fled to escape the king's wrath. In hiding David further cemented his popularity among the Israelites by "Beginning as an outlaw, with a price on his head, David led the life of a Robin Hood on the desert frontier of his country (Judah). He became the leader and organizer of other outlaws and refugees; and, according to the Bible, ". . . everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented, gathered to him; and he became captain over them." This group progressively ingratiated itself with the local population by protecting them from other bandits or, in case they had been raided, by pursuing the raiders and restoring the possessions that had been taken" (Britannica). David gained his popularity from this and eventually lead him to being selected as…

“Guilt is the hilt of the knife that we use on ourselves, and love is often the blade; but it's worry that keeps the knife sharp, and worry that gets most of us, in the end” (G. Roberts).Guilt is the strongest and most corrosive of feelings. Like acid, it can eat away at your insides and render you numb, just like it did to Kate. In the novel Crow Lake by Mary Lawson, the theme of guilt has a persistent presence and impact on Kate, Luke and Matt.…

    A. Jeannette Walls, in her memoir The Glass Castle, demonstrates Erikson’s eight stages of development. Through the carefully recounted stories of her childhood and adolescence, we are able to trace her development from one stage to the next. While Walls struggles through some of the early developmental stages, she inevitably succeeds and has positive outcomes through adulthood. The memoir itself is not only the proof that she is successful and productive in middle adulthood, but the memoir may also have been part of her healing process. Writing is often a release and in writing her memoir and remembering her history, she may have been able to come to terms with her sad past. The memoir embodies both the proof that she has successfully graduated through Erickson’s stages of development while also being the reason that she is able to do so.…

The story of David and Goliath showed extraordinary faith in God in more ways than you can count. First of all, David was obsequious to God and trusted him to protect him. When Saul questions him he says, “God, who delivered me from the teeth of the lion and the claws of the bear, will deliver me from this Philistine” (1 Samuel 17:37). This excerpt shows that God protected David always. In other words, David exorbitantly trusted God in every aspect of this decision. Another example of his trusting nature was his willingness to fight Goliath. Even though every person told him to not do it, he persevered and decided to go into battle with just a sling and rocks alone. In addition, David was not a trained fighter, but a shepherd…

Claude Vignon’s David with the Head of Goliath, is quite obviously focused on a recognizable subject matter being the Old Testament story that we all know so well. What Vignon brings to the popular scene to make it his own is the emotion surrounding the event. As previously mention its is that of a saddened child unsure of what he’s done, rather than that of a soldier victorious in battle; an emotion not previously portrayed in a work of…
