Raven Baxter Biography
The name “Raven Baxter” is without a doubt a part of my childhood memories. Portrayed by actress Raven-Symoné, Raven Baxter, star of Disney Channel’s TV show “That’s So Raven,” was the fashionista just trying to make it through high school whom I used as a guide for what my 17-year-old self might face one day. With her dynamic duo of best friends Eddie and Chelsea, her money-loving younger brother Cory, and her funny and sweet parents Victor and Tanya, it is no surprise that Raven was such a memorable character—not to mention the fact that she was sidekick. Now, nearly 10 years since the show ended, the world has been blessed with the announcement that Disney Channel will be making a spinoff of “That’s So Raven,” starring Symoné. She will still play Raven Baxter, but rather than the teenager we all know and love, she will be a divorced mom with two kids (one of whom is also psychic), according to a Variety article. And I have mixed feelings about it. …show more content…
However, my concern lies within the way that Disney Channel could possibly execute it. I was absolutely in love with Disney Channel shows as a kid. Of course “That’s So Raven” was amazing, but “Lizzie McGuire,” “Even Stevens” and “Phil of the Future” were also contenders for my all-time favorite series. With my still-unwavering fondness toward my era’s Disney Channel shows, I, in letting my curiosity wander, and have found myself putting on Disney Channel just to see what “the kids” are watching these days. Rarely am I able to keep the channel on for more than a few minutes, though, because, much to my dismay, I am always quite unimpressed. I find that today’s Disney Channel shows are much less sophisticated and far tackier than those of my childhood. The sense of humor is cliché, and the acting is poorly over-dramatic, making the shows more immature and much less

    The Raven creates a sense of doom for the speaker by confirming the fact that he will never be able to get rid of his sorrow. He will always be sad as he longs for his lost love, Lenore. In the poem, there’s a part where the Speaker is irate and driven to madness by the Raven. He screams at the Raven, “Leave my loneliness unbroken! – quit thy bust above my door! / Take thy beak from out my heart and take thy form from off my door” (Poe 17).     Disney has expanded their enterprise into many different areas, one of them being television. As Disney has explored the medium of television, they have focused the shows for the audience of children. In 1955, The Mickey Mouse Club was one of the first shows that Disney had on television. In order to appeal to younger audiences, the show had “young attractive stars performing before a live audience, clowns, magicians, cartoons, guest stars, educational elements, and music written for the show” (Pendergast). Children liked to watch the show because they were watching kids that were about the same age as them, and they could relate to the actors. The children watching the show were heavily influenced by the Mickey Mouse Club because they looked up to and saw the actors as role models (Telotte). They wanted to be like the actors, so Disney profited off this generation of children by putting out merchandise related to the show. In this way, Disney started making more and more money because of these child actors. Many people argue about the effect that watching Disney’s television shows and “their positive and negative influence on kids” (Hillstrom). However, what about the effect that Disney’s television shows have on the child actors? These children spend their childhood on the sets of television shows, “being a kid is a full-time job, with scripts to memorize, and tutoring to endure” (Corliss). They are playing the characters of normal kids, without being able to experience a normal childhood themselves, it is no wonder that many child stars get into trouble when they “start growing up and moving out” (Armstrong, Markovitz) and leave Disney, because they have not been able to experience normal life growing up as a Disney actor.…

    As Denby states in his “Avalanche” essay, he gives various reasons as to why our society has been crushed by the avalanche of crud. Denby starts off discussing about censorship in the past such as the V-chip for parental blocks on the television for children. He states that pop culture has “invaded their homes, and the habits, manners and souls of their children”. By that statement, Denby strongly believes that no matter what the show or form of social media, it has a bad message to it.
