My grandfather, Raul Rodriguez was born on May 20th, 1931, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was raised in San Juan, in the streets of Locillo, which is five minutes away from the beach. He spent most of his childhood in Puerto Rico. He is a man with a great personality and great mind, he has always been in my life, from the day first day I was born to the present moment. He has taught me discipline and the importance of life. He is a helper, a mentor and a role model. This person means the world to me; my grandfather is the head of our family. He also has 5 grandchildren, Abbi, Maximo, Maite, Viviana, and myself. After several years in Maracaibo, he and his family returned to Caracas. Once he arrived at Caracas he opened his own restaurant called Mojitos. The restaurant served Puerto Rican food and many other different types of food. When the restaurant was first starting, he was the only chef of the restaurant and only had three workers working for him. After two years of working hard, the restaurant became a well-known restaurant in the city and starting gaining a lot of customers. His restaurant has been successful and he hopes to be opening another restaurant soon. Eight years ago, my grandfather was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He was sent to the University of Miami hospital in Miami, Florida. The doctors told him he didn’t have much time to live. The tumor was the size of a grapefruit. He had to do some chemotherapy treatment for a while. After seven months, he was fully recovered and was still active. During this period, my grandfather lost his appetite and it was very difficult for him to eat. But extraordinarily, his vision remained perfect. He has accomplished a plethora of things in his life. He has been successful at everything he has done and has never had any failure at anything he has ever tried. He has always been a great role model for the family and has proved to me that it doesn’t matter who we are, where we come from, or what language we speak, we can all reach our dreams. I can only hope to be half the person he his. He has always worked hard; he has owned restaurants and found great success amongst his three children he has raised and being present in his grandkids lives. He worked very hard for everything that he has. He has influenced my life tremendously and myself as a person extremely and without my grandfather, I think I would be a completely different person. As a matter of fact, more 200,000 US cases of brain tumors are reported per year according to Brain Tumor Society. Brain tumor is abnormal growth of tissue in the brain and comes in two forms, benign and malignant. A benign brain tumor is made up of non-cancerous cells and does not spread beyond the part of the brain where it initially formed.
