English is spoken as a native language by about 375 million people and as a second language by around 375 million speakers in the world. And according to research by the British Council, speakers of English as a second language will soon outnumber those who speak it as a first language. Philippines, for example, is also using English as its second language, and every year the number of fluent English speakers here is getting bigger and bigger, which I think is very beneficial for our country. Just imagine if all the Filipinos can speak in English correctly then we could be globally competitive. This is exactly what my club, the Einstein Circle of Shakespeare, wants to do – to be able to produce global Pinoys that can compete with other countries. I know that this is such a great milestone to leap and the process would surely be long, so together with my advisers and officers, we taught of a solution and made the English-Only policy. This policy campaigns to improve the skills of every Einsteinian in language proficiency and also to make this school an English Speaking Zone. At selected places we posted English-Speaking Zone cards so that Einsteinians would be reminded that they should use the English language. And as the president of the Einstein Circle of Shakespeare I can say that our campaign was successful of course with the help of the Einstein Circle of Shakespeare outgoing officers for the School Year 2012-2013. Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you my 4th year vice president 3rd year vice president Secretary Treasurer Auditor P.R.O. Business Managers I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to you guys for sharing with me your abilities to ensure the success of our campaign. It is such a privilege to work with wonderful people who always prioritize the good of the organization. But of course I want to reward the one that really extended her help and is always willing to render her service even without conditions.

English had started to be known as a lingua franca around the period of World War II. After reading the English Effect report by the British council written by Howson (2013) it can be estimated that approximately 1.75 billion people use English worldwide, in other words, approximately one in four people speak English at a “useful level”. The main people who are learning and speaking English are “the economically active, the thought leaders, the business decision-makers, the young, the movers and shakers present and future” (Howson, 2013). There are more non-native speakers of English than there are native speakers therefore it can be said that English…

Nowadays, all people say that English is the most essential and easiest language that people could use to communicate in different countries. As I read thoroughly the two articles, which are called “ English seen as a Co-star among Global Language” and “Can English be Dethroned”, I’ve found out that people more commonly accept using English as a second language in the 21st century. We all understand the fact that English has been growing in popularity largely as economic globalization is getting bigger. The benefits of English as a common language for communication and interaction far outweigh any possible disadvantages that it might have. English is a global language not because the world shows respect to it by accepting it as a global language because it has the characteristics of a global language.…

The English language is said to be the global lingua franca that is used by several countries so as to communicate with other countries. That is why we need to be proficient in speaking it. One of the few countries which made English as their official second language is the Philippines. The need for knowing the English language increases because of globalization and our connections, relations and transactions with other countries. Because of this great need, schools from all over the world require the study of the English language. Students even tend to study English outside of their country so as to suffice their need of the language.…

English is inarguably the global language. Ironically, it is not the largest spoken language, but it is the most wide spread. 375 million people speak it as a first language, and 375 million know English as a second language, and another 750 million people are learning it. The statistic that stands out the most, is that a third of the population is exposed to it in one way or another. The phrase, “English is taking over the world,” is definitely not an understatement. If English continues its expansion, then the world could be looking at a super-language. This would be a big step for globalization. The effects of this can only be speculated.…

After I read “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan, “The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria” by Judith Ortiz Cofer, and “Two Ways to Belong in America” by Bharati Mukherjee, I understand that the familiarity with the English language affect the authors a lot. All of those three writers share the same attitude that learning English can affect people’s lives. I totally agree with these three writer’s opinions that English can affect people and I think people who live in the United States should speak English fluently. Everybody looks at English in many different ways. Some people think that English is just a language that can make a connection with other people; some people think that English is a tool which can be used in work and there are also some people who think that English is the best way to speak with family members. There are both advantages and disadvantage for learning English as a second language. The advantages are that learning English can make family members closer and can help people to find a better job; but as a second language, English is hard to learn.…

It seems today that Standard English is taking over the world. Standard English is the main language many countries call their national language. Even foreign countries are starting to use the English language more often. The University even offers English Second Language classes so that foreigners can learn English. English is indeed the most popular and the most used language in the world. There are some countries like in Japan; not sure but Japanese people don’t actually require speaking English. For me, it’s the reason for their unreachable success. With their Japanese to Japanese language speaking, they can understand each other very clear. I think, it is one of the major problems here in the Philippines wherein we are doing Filipino to English language speaking, we don’t sometimes understand the meaning of an English word unless translated to Filipino or more understandable language by a pinoy that is fluent in English but it is a job requirement that a person applying for a job, no matter what position it is, especially here in the Philippines must be used or know how to speak English so that communication with foreign or local investors, clients or customers is easy.…

The English language is widely acknowledged to be the language of modern times; it is an international language for communication and education. English, according to the Time Almanac (2010), is the most widely spoken language in the world. It is spoken by approximately 1000 million people, which constitute almost 16 percent of the world‟s population. The vibrant use of English in all nooks and corners of the non-English speaking world has outnumbered native speakers by non-native users, involving 80% use of English between L2 speakers. (Deterding, 2006; Sarwar, 2001; Benecke, 1991; Crystal, 2000; 2003). It is so widely spoken that besides the internal varieties of English (varieties spoken within English speaking countries), the non-native English speaking part of the…

There is no doubt whatsoever about English being a global language in these times we are leaving in. It has become the language of communication and technology and any one who does not want to be left behind in all this has no option but to learn it and eventually English speakers in the coming years will increase extremely. This in itself will disadvantage the native English speakers as they will be outnumbered by the non-native English speakers. They will be the only ones speaking one language as they will see no reason in learning a second language. With time the English language will be controlled be the many non-native speakers who will have become competent in it. The language will then diversify into many versions that will then bring about a lesser understanding than it was initially intended.…

The second most spoken language in the world and the lingua franca in many professions, English is a culturally rich, exciting field of study, with some 380 million native speakers. Only Chinese and Hindi have more native speakers while Spanish is similar in number. English is also the dominant member of the Germanic languages. It has lingua franca status in many parts of the world, due to the military, economic, scientific, political and cultural influence of the British Empire in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries and that of the United States from the early 20th century to the present.…
