Ralph's Smartness In Lord Of The Flies

At the very beginning of the novel, Golding has described Ralph as the “the boy with fair hair”. Fair hair does not only mean that his hair is golden, but also shows that he is fair to everyone which is foreshadowing of what Ralph’s style of leadership is. As for Jack, he looks a bit ugly, as “his face was crumpled and freckled, and ugly without silliness.” He is smart, but he doesn’t really show the smartness in some positive ways. The wrong use of his smartness finally leads to a sad ending. Later on when the boys agree that they should have a chief, Jack says “I ought to be chief, because I am chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp.” It is really childish for Jack to say that. To be honest, he always thinks that life on the island
