Rainbow Omega Essay

By about six-thirty in the morning, we had loaded the van and we were ready to go. We got on the road and were on Highway 64 heading to Eastaboga, AL. Eastaboga is home to two things, the Talladega Speedway and Rainbow Omega. One of those two places was our destination. Rainbow Omega houses over 82 residents who are afflicted with mental illness. The variety of afflictions range from small brain damage to down syndrome. Nonetheless, the residents stay there permanently with weekend shopping trips or vacations with their parents. All of the tenants are over the age of 30, so that puts their parents at about 60. With that being said, a majority of the guardians are not able to give the care that is offered at Rainbow Omega. Our first few moments consisted of unloading the van, and meeting Stentson Carpenter. He was the CEO of Rainbow Omega. He started the organization after his son passed away from down syndrome. He was determined and inspired to create a place where people like his son could reside and be cared for. After meeting Stentson, we got to meet the residents. They came in to the vocational building. The vocational building is where we stayed. It had a kitchen, laundry machines for the residents, a main area for various activities, and two small rooms for us to stay in. They came in through the side door into the main area. I remember I was nervous and yet anxious at the same time to meet them. We have a guy in our youth group who has down syndrome and I was and still am very comfortable around him, but meeting 82 people like him, made me uneasy. Josh was the first person I met. He was a little shy but very excited for us to be there. After getting to know me a little bit, he considered us best friends. He was no longer shy or scared around
