Racism has existed throughout human history. It may be defined as the hatred of one person by another -- or the belief that another person is less than human. Racism and discrimination have been used as powerful weapons to encourage fear or hatred of others in times of conflict and war. Racism is also a very touchy subject for some people. It happens to millions of people on a daily basis. Racism is wrong for many reasons. It can hurt people in different ways, it can make people too self-righteous and it is unfair to treat someone different because of their race.
Many people believe that it depends on if a person was brought into the world as a racist or not but that is not the case at all. In fact, you cannot be born a racist but only learn to become one as they grow from child to adulthood. Many people who practice racism are raised to be a racist by their parents. They then pass those beliefs to their children which can cause fore coming generations to practice racism. This shouldn’t happen but it is impossible to prevent it. It is up to the people of those generations to refuse to pass down the practice of racism. Another very common cause for racism is the unusualness of one towards other races. People have the tendency to fear what they do not understand. If a person has not grown up around a particular race before, then the chance of the person being a racist toward that particular group is increased.
Racism is and can be a hurtful social issue. Blacks during the civil rights movement era were tormented and discriminated against just because their skin was different than the “superior” whites. I can’t imagine what that is like because you can’t help what the color of your skin is. Blacks were spited on, beaten up and sometimes lynched. That’s how terrible racism was and still is in some cities. This should not be. People who are racist need to open their eyes.
