Timothy is engaged and is a professor in San Antonio, Texas. Timothy is an avid runner “[who doesn’t run for health, but runs] to stay thin and [recently] to blow off steam” (Braun) due to the stresses of everyday life, such as the stress from work and the relationship with his fiancée. While out on a run one day, Timothy had stopped at an animal shelter to grab a drink of water from the fountain to cool down. Upon entering the shelter, he had encountered a “half husky and half Australian shepherd” (Braun) who had “one blue eye and one brown eye” (Braun). Timothy had no intention of adopting a dog that day. In fact, he didn’t adopt a dog that day. Timothy “thought about how much damage [a dog] could cause [in his] life (Braun). “The dog was nice, but having a dog would be like having a child” (Braun). For one reason or another, Timothy decided to take on the responsibility of adopting and caring for Dusty. The choice to adopt Dusty shows a nurturing characteristic of Timothy. Not only did Timothy decide to put his convenience aside, he took on an obligation showing a mature and responsible…

March of the Penguins, by Director Luc Jacquet, demonstrates that sometimes the simplest conflicts in life are perhaps the greatest. This film is penguin versus nature; it's love; it's birth; it's death. Each of the three themes are simple. Each of the themes are clear. The end result is a movie that packs more feeling than anything I have seen in a long time.…

Sometimes life just does not allow us to reach our goals, sometimes people find bumps and rough patches between them and their dreams, and sometimes it seems like the only option is to give up and move on, however, if you really want something and don’t get it at the first attempt, are you a loser for failing or a success for trying?. Michael Arndt’s script, “Little Miss Sunshine”, tells the story of Olive Hoover, and how her dream of participating in a children’s beauty pageant brings her, and her dysfunctional but caring family into an eventful road trip from their home in Albuquerque, New Mexico to California. In the 2006 movie adaptation of the script, by following the stories of Olive’s…

While in this course we had to read a lot of poems and stories, and I feel that they all had a hidden message in everyone of them. One short story that stood out to me was the historical story of the Battle Royal. This story brought light to something that I had never known about, and if it wasn’t for taking this class I would still have no idea about. The story about the Battle Royal is about a high school graduate that gets thrown into a ring with other African American high schoolers and are to fight for the rich white men.…

    New Jim Crow Theme

The book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, by Michelle Alexander, has a few different themes. The themes that stuck out to me from both readings and lectures are ignorance and denial, and the failure of colorblindness. The central theme of Alexander’s book is basically that the American system of mass incarceration is a systematic effort to ostracize people of color just like the old Jim Crow laws did in the 19th and 20th centuries. The present-day prisons make it hard for those released to find houses and jobs, and even lead regular lives like those who have never been to prison.…

In scenes 20-23, the children are at their “Peak desperation”, and their most emotionally vulnerable. The escaped prisoner of war or “Itie” has caused this, from whom the children are hiding. When “The six run in a ragged formation”, away from the “Itie”, fear is preventing the children from being able to express their concerns. Instead of discussing what would be the best thing to do, Peter suggests, “Let’s run for it!” To show the fear of the children, Potter uses adults to play the roles of children; to the audience this amplifies the suffering of the children.…

Adopting a situated learning perspective, I have come to believe that the true power of Twitter and other social networking tools lies in their potential to extend learning beyond the boundaries of the classroom community. Based on the idea, learning takes place as “newcomers” become more proficient practitioners of a discipline through participating in Communities of Practice. Learning is a social process facilitated by interaction with others who are mutually engaged in the socially and culturally defined practices of the community. Social networking technologies can allow second language learners to negotiate meaning and shape their identity as English speakers as they connect with and participate in the real world communities that are important to their lives. In reviewing the articles that have become this bibliography, I have been seeking the intersections between the affordances of Twitter and similar popular social networking technologies, situated learning theory in terms technology assisted learning through engagement in online communities. The bibliography may have significance not only for second language teachers, but also for those interested in the educational value and potential use of social networking technologies for online learning, mobile learning, student recruitment, and engagement of students in learning. The researches show that social media has positive and negative effects on young teens now and days. I will use this on my own, because I am one of the young teens this could have an effect on.…
