Racial Segregation: The Detrimental Effects Of Racism In Society Today
Racial segregation ended over 50 years ago, however racism is still apparent in society today. After two months into college, I experienced racism directed at myself for the first time when watching the presidential election of 2016 with a group. A peer asked me about my thoughts on Trump’s immigration and foreign policy stance. After stating that I did not like aspects of it, I was interrupted and immediately discredited by the peer claiming, “[I] only feel that way because of [my] color.” I stared dumbfounded at first, but soon everyone was looking at me since I was the only person of color in the room. I rebutted with, “my viewpoint is still valid no matter my color.” In retrospect, I think I handled the situation satisfactorily, but I didn’t address the ignorance of racism.
