REU Personal Statement
As a sociology major, my interests lie in how society is created, maintained and played out by social actors. Understanding the roles, symbols and meanings that society assigns to not only its participants but also the environment, is something I am fascinated by and enjoy researching and understanding. I am also interested in the interdisciplinary studying of the roles and interactions that our environment has on individuals who make up society, and how the two interplay with each other over space and time. Also, I find research that seeks to understand how different environments and locations can influence the culture being built and maintained there, to be of great academic interest and importance to my future education and career plans. Participating in this REU program would benefit my future pursuits and goals in a major way. After I obtain undergraduate degree next fall, I plan to pursue a master in environmental policy, and eventually work in the Department of Interior, helping preserve and protect public lands, as well as help implement new National Park Services properties. I hope to analyze and investigate how …show more content…
While church forests play a major role in conservation in Ethiopia, the research model utilized with Colby’s REU can also be applied to the social and geospatial research that I will be doing with the DOI and NPS when researching the relationship between individuals and federal parks. Along with the research itself, I will also be strengthening my ability to connect and communicate with those in a range of fields, as the DOI is an interdisciplinary operation. By working with and utilizing GIS and survey methods in the Colby REU program, I will advance my knowledge and skills, and apply similar research models and methods for establishing NPS

I am a born leader and I would love to be able to bring my passion for leading and hard-work to Indiana University. Over the years I have moved a lot and been to four different schools throughout middle school and high school. At first it was a struggle to keep my grades up while trying to make friends and play sports, but I have since found that the key is all things in moderation. I play tennis and am a cheerleader for my high school and plan on continuing these sports while at IU. I love the spirit that revolves around the school sports and other events at Indiana University. I would be very involved with keeping the Indiana Hoosier traditions alive. I also plan to be involved with the Greek life at Indiana University. If I am given the opportunity to attend Indiana University, I would want to study business.…

Sociology was a subject which pushed me beyond my comfort zone- I had to scrutinise and re-assess common perceptions of the social world. I even viewed the education system in the view of a sociologist, both assessing its benefits and drawbacks on students. It raised many questions in my mind and converse debates in the classroom where I had to demonstrate some form of critical thinking. I needed to think outside of my bounds and provide a balanced argument on societal issues.…

When I was eleven years old I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I had a hard time coping with the changes in my mood. Part of my healing process consisted of trying many different medications, therapies, and developing the desire to heal. During this time, friends I had for many years pushed me away, and although I felt alone and confused at times, I came out thriving. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder thought to be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that can result in extreme swings in mood—from manic highs to depressive lows. To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have experienced a high period (mania). Bipolar mania is described as an “extreme high,” or feeling unusually great. Most people with bipolar disorder when ill or when symptomatic experience more lows than highs. Unfortunately, the lows I experienced were so extreme that the friends I thought would be by my side through anything chose to follow other kids and use my disorder to bully me creating deeper depression. Initially, I felt stigmatized by my diagnosis. Most people I encountered either didn’t know what bipolar was or how to interact with someone suffering with the disorder. Teachers, peers, and family members had a hard time knowing what to say or how to act around me. I started to feel like I was no longer my own person but just one big disaster and my mood swings became even more extreme as a result. Eventually, I grew tired of feeling sorry for myself and began my quest for the right medication, vitamins, nutrition, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing. I found my inner strength and courage. I put my energy into school, new friendships and family and started…

A friend recently told me “Don’t let the things you can’t control, control you”. I realized how much this small piece of advice relates to my life as an African American woman. I can’t control the fact that I don’t live with- or even know- my father. I can’t control how society perceives people of color. But I control what I do. I have discovered that I embody the ability to beat the odds given to a black, fatherless girl. I can be who I want to be with hard work and determination.…
