R. J Palacio Book Report

In the book the author, R.J. Palacio talked a lot about the main character's background, 1st person narrator, and description. The book is about a fifth grader named Auggie who has a disease that makes his face looks deformed. Auggie has a big problem making new friends because whenever someone looks at him they always make some kind of face. Most kids that do, don’t actually tease him they just can’t help but stop and stare. Auggie once grew his bangs out just so he couldn't see what people looked like when they saw his face. In the beginning of the book it talked a lot about his perspective on everything and his background. Auggie talks about how just going to the grocery store is hard for him because he knows what the people are going to do. He has to be in the right mood just to get out of the house. The author does a very good job describing what emotion Auggie has when he goes somewhere or sees something. Throughout the whole book the author is showing Auggie’s perspective of everything. Seeing kids at the movie theatre, going to a grocery store, how it feels to dress up for halloween.
The author makes it so that Auggie is telling you what happened to him and why his face is the way it is. She makes it so it’s a mystery she never describes what his face actually look like but it does say “I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking it’s probably worse.” The main conflict in the book is that Auggie’s face looks different than all the other kids and the other kids don’t know how to handle it. Auggie has a hard time finding friends because they all make weird faces whenever they see him. The author makes it so that it seems like we are living in his life and it makes the reader feel like we are
