R-5122 Reflective Essay
The policy that I chose is R-5122. The policy explains the steps on how an educator is to communicate the progress on students. In other words, it breaks down the grades and how the educator is to convey what the grades mean to the caretakers. R-5122 states that caretakers are to be informed on their child’s grades every 18 weeks if the child is in elementary and quarterly from grades 6-12. In the policy is recommended that at least one care taker is present during the parent-teacher conference from the beginning of the year. Additionally, R-5122 suggests that caretakers are to refer to the county’s portal to stay up-to-date on their child’s progress. Moreover, the policy suggests that educators are to keep records of those encounters with the caretakers.

R-5122 does not apply to the first point which is that the primary givers are experts on their child. I personally think that the educator is the expert when it comes to the child’s education as the teacher is the one that is assessing formally and informally. On the second point, the family cannot really make the final decision on what the child will receive for a grade. However, the family and decide what steps they will take in order to help the child succeed. The third point is applicable as the family is the nucleus in the child’s life and indeed are the constant and are the service providers. This however, does not limit the school to become providers of services that the child might need in order to excel socially and academically. The fourth point is a tricky one, the parents do make the final decisions and as educators and administrators we must respect their priorities. These statistics further prove the claim that many schools in America are doing well below average work in teaching and preparing students to get jobs and be well educated citizens. Sometimes it isn’t the parent’s choice to send their son or daughter to these failing schools. Why should they be even more penalized, especially penalizing a young child?
