I- En quoi consiste le travail d’un manager?

Demandez à un manager quel est son travail, il vous répondra probablement qu’il planifie, organise, coordonne et contrôle. Maintenant, si vous observez ce qu’il fait, ne soyez pas surpris si vous ne percevez aucune relation entre ces mots et ce que vous voyez.

Le monde du management, si tourné vers le progrès et le changement, a pendant plus d’un demi-siècle éludé la question essentielle En quoi consiste le travail des managers ? Si l’on ne sait pas répondre à cette question, comment enseigner le management? Comment concevoir des systèmes d’information ou de planification pour les managers ? Comment prétendre même améliorer les pratiques managériales?

Notre ignorance quant à la nature du travail du manager se révèle diversement :
1- des dirigeants brillants se targuent d’avoir réussi sans avoir jamais mis les pieds dans un séminaire de formation.

2- les analystes en gestion se succèdent, sans avoir jamais vraiment compris ce que l’on attendait d’eux exactement.

3- les ordinateurs se couvrent de poussière dans un coin, parce que les managers ont toujours boudé le système intégré de gestion (SIG) en ligne que quel que analyste jugeait indispensable.

Mon intention est d’introduire une description plus utile et plus supportable du travail du manager. Cette description découle de ma propre enquête et de la synthèse que j’ai effectuée à partir d’autres recherches portant sur l’emploi du temps des managers. Elle est bien différente toutefois de l’image qu’on se fait habituellement du travail du manager.

II-Le travail du manager: mythes et réalités
Quatre mythes entourent le travail du manager, qui ne résistent pas à l’examen soigneux des faits.

Mythes Réalités le manager a un plan méthodique et réfléchi. les managers travaillent sans répit, leurs activités se caractérisent par la brièveté, la diversité et la discontinuité, et ils sont essentiellement tournés vers l’action et répugnent à la réflexion.

    This essay will argue that it is important to study management and organisations in a critical, questioning way for two reasons. First, it is important to do so due to the influence and reach of management in large commercial organisations that covers a lot of aspects in the society, economy and culture.
