There seems to be a great misconception on how students are graded by their professors or teachers. Ahmed Afzaal, an assistant professor at Concordia College, concluded that “to the extent that the faculty-student relationship becomes tense and even adversarial, the community is weakened and the goal of perpetual learning is jeopardized” (Afzaal, 2012). While grading his students’ work, he takes a different approach “one that will enhance rather than impede their learning” (Afzaal, 2012). However it is noted that it is not just students having this misconception on grades but “employers, graduate and professional schools, and academic-award givers have a natural, if misguided, interest in undergraduates ' performance” (Dole, 2002).…

To determine if the sources I used in my Annotated Bibliography were reliable and relevant, I first researched where the publication originated. Both of the publications were printed in well known newspapers. Typically, printed publications are more reliable due to the cost of printing. Imagine the cost of printing something that was false in a book or a magazine and then having to retract it. Then I went on to research the writer by checking to see if they had any previous publications for that newspaper. Another step I took was to see if the newspaper was current. Checking to see if there are recent articles published also helps in determining the reliability of the source. The topics I chose were self-motivation and time management. I chose to elaborate on these topics because they are both things that I have struggled with. I used the campus library to locate both articles.…

In order to determine the validity of a source, to prove it is a primary source and not a secondary source, one must look at several things. There are many aspects about it that show its validity. These include; when the event the source is talking about took place compared to when the author wrote the piece and when they were alive, whether or not it was an eye-witness account, and the reason the author wrote about it. Also in the evaluation process of the source, one must consider the audience in which it was written for, the evidence used to support the author, and the value of it in history. In examining the article Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell, One can find this article in indeed a valid, reliable primary source.…

In result of The Seven Years’ War Britain controlled American trade and territory. In order to pay for the expenses of the war several taxation acts and military presence were implemented such as the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Currency Act, Quartering Act and the presence of British troops at the colonies. Consequently, Americans who thought these actions violated their political and constitutional liberties opposed these policies with petitions, boycotts, and resistance strategies known as the Imperial Crisis. In January 1776 Thomas Paine’s Common Sense was composed to convince Americans of the need for independence from British rule and establishment of democracy. This pamphlet was written in common language to appeal to lower class citizens, rather than written in Latin, which was aimed towards the small elite. Also, Paine made several biblical references to appeal to his the people and King George III, “the Pharaoh of England” (Thomas Paine, Common Sense). Ironically, Thomas Paine was an English immigrant; however he offered a good perspective on the importance of American independence. Thomas Paine, John Adams and Dr. Benjamin Rush consisted of a group who fought for American independence by constructing the pamphlet. Attacking the English government, Paine states, “Society in every state is a blessing, but government even in its best state is but a necessary evil in its worst state an in tolerable one; for when we suffer, or are exposed to the same miseries by a government, which we might expect in a country without government, our calamities is heightened by reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer!” (Thomas Paine, Common Sense).…

Through this lab I learned that some websites that I normally would pass because I didn’t think had the information I needed are actually ones I should look at first. FAQ pages should not be passed up, but instead looked at regularly. I generally thought that the information I needed for papers was easy to find. It isn’t till now that I am seeing that I have possibly been using wrong information in my research papers for the past 7 years, off and on, that I have been taking college classes. Part of me feels that I have been providing false information all this time, when really probably only a small percentage of my papers contained mislead information.…

Many students accidentally plagiarize because they cannot find a way to get their own points of view and voices into the essays they are trying to write. In “Theft, Fraud, and Loss of Voice,” a chapter from his book Transition to College Writing, Keith Hjortshoj explains to student writers the importance of establishing their own voice and points of view so that the sources they use can be woven into their arguments in ways that reduce the likelihood (and temptation) of both accidental and intentional plagiarism.…
