Qualities Of Chris Mccandless
Chris McCandless was an extraordinary person with an adventurous life. He had lived his life with taking risks and living a little bit over the edge at times. The way he had presented himself to others had those thinking what it was about this guy that made him stand out in front of the crowd. Almost everyone he met knew there was something special about him. In the beginning, McCandless knew he was ready to just get up and start a new journey. He kept to himself about his adventure to Alaska and did not want anyone to know where, when or why he was leaving. Chris knew he had all of the materials he needed, until it came to a plot twist when he had burned all of his money and abandoned his car anyways. Gallien, a friend of Chris, even said “There was just no talking the guy out of it… he was determined.” Other people saw determination in him as well. Throughout his adventure he crossed paths with people by hitchhiking and going to public places. A few of the people would offer him money or food, and immediate he would deny the offer but accept their generosity. Something about Chris …show more content…
There were traits and certain qualities about him that people tended to enjoy. In my opinion one of the most important things about him was that he wanted to isolate from society to go do his own things and live life his own way. He was not dependant on others or objects to make him happy. He was very easily pleased by the littlest of things. When Chris would meet people and become close in friendship, those were the ones who wanted to stay in contact with him and check up on him once in a while. Alex has promised to keep in touch with a few people and send postcards to let them know how he is doing. One letter he had sent was to Bob and Jan saying “don’t know where I’m headed now but I’ll write you when I get there…”Jan and Bob were friends of him who wanted to stay on the lookout for Chris incase of anything that may

Also many people argued that McCandless was suffering from a mental illness probably like depression, however, there has been no evidence given that Chris was actually suffering from this. A third thing is that there is no doubt that Chris McCandless did not have a bound with his parents, he did not spend a lot of time with them, but have people considered the fact that Chris did not want to become like his parents, the type that have to work all the time and the type that do not have time to do anything else but…

He wanted to go through his journey using few supplies and using only what he knew or could gain for himself. He did this because he wanted to escape the material world that his father and mother had created for themselves and that he, up until his departure, had been caught up in himself. I believe that what he did was necessary for him to feel better and for him to be happy in his life. I think it was very brave of Chris to have the courage to do this. Krakuer writes “He buried his Winchester deer-hunting rifle and a few other possessions that he might one day want to recover. Then, in a gesture that would have done both Thoreau and Tolstoy proud, he arranged all his paper currency in a pile on the sand – a pathetic little stack of ones and fives and twenties – and put a match to it.” (Chapter 4, page 29). Chris burned his money and buried his possessions so he could be free of the material bindings that were weighing him down. He wanted to experience the freedom that Thoreau, Tolstoy, and countless other have felt. Chris was very brave in leaving his material goods behind, and I admire that bravery and his attitude towards the…

He had very strong beliefs along with the determination to let nothing stop him in his path. Chris set out to live in the Alaskan wilderness for a couple of weeks and it proved to be more than he could handle. His resources became scarce and he feared for his own life. He ended up leaving an S.O.S note on the door of the bus he was living in and it read “Injured, near death, and too weak to hike out of here, I am all alone, this is no joke (Krakauer 12).” His journey to Alaska proved to be fatal and a vast amount of theories began to spread across the media about how Chris died. Everyone has built an opinion about Chris McCandless, some say he’s crazy and ignorant and others say he’s bright and heroic. Shaun Callarman, a native Alaskan, didn’t admire him at all for his courage or his noble ideas. He felt that Chris McCandless was “Bright and ignorant at the same time,” and that “He had no common sense and no business going to Alaska with his romantic silliness.” I disagree with Shaun’s opinion to a certain extent because I feel that Chris was both foolish and noble when he began his journey to Alaska. Chris sought out to find himself and he let nothing stand in his path, but he wasn’t fully prepared for the…

Although some may believe that Chris McCandless went into the wild because of inspiration, I think that his primary reason was due to his family issues and emotional damage. I feel as if he was trying to run away and leave his past life. I can agree with others beliefs that he was inspired because he did read many things and was very influenced by some writings. However, the apparent problems he had with his family caused this issue because he showed many times before that he didn’t like his home life. Others even saw that he was unhappy with his parents and he wanted to leave and live what he thought to be a more peaceful life. Not only was just his parents divorce talks, his arguments with his father, and his distance he felt from his mom and dad a huge problem for him, he also was emotionally damaged by other…
