Pyrex case study
Pyrex Case Study

The current dilemma with World Kitchen is to continuing making Pyrex themselves, or to contract the manufacturing out and buying it that way. This problems has arisen because of the aging Pyrex plant in Charleroi needs an upgrading and they have decided to look at it to see if it is better to outsource it or to upgrade the plant and continue to make it. Pyrex was first started in the early 1900’s by Corning Glass Works. It was made by mistake when Bessie Littleton the wife of a Corning chemist ask her husband to bring home s some strong shatterproof glass for her to use in the kitchen. What her husband did was bring two jars home, made of low- expansion glass. Bessie had cooked a sponge cake in one of the glasses and she found out that the cooking time was shorter, it did not stick to the glass, the flavor washed off of it and did not stick to the glass, and she could see through it to see how the cake was baking. The Chemist then took the cake to his work the following day and had his coworkers look at what she had made with the glass he took home. They then began a two year process to perfect the glass and to start selling it. So in 1915 Pyrex started to hit department and China stores everywhere. World Kitchen was formed in 2000 and is the current owner of Pyrex. World Kitchen already outsources a bunch of their products and this is so they can stay competitive with the competition. That is because with a lot of their current products they are made cheaper overseas versus the cost it would be to make them in the states. By 2006 World Kitchen only owned two plants in United Stated the Pyrex one in Charleroi and a Corelle Plant. The two plants use different forms of technology, the Charleroi plant uses tempering the thick translucent glass while the Corelle plant uses a processes by pressing three layers of thin strengthened opaque glass together. In the Charleroi plant they have a furnace that has to run 24 hours a day and it is

    Lab 20: Flame Tests

Purpose/Objective: The ground state is the normal electron configuration of atoms or ions in an element. When atoms or ions in ground state are heated to a higher temperature, some electrons absorb enough energy to move them to higher energy levels. This is known as the excited state. However, the excited configuration is unstable, and the electrons must return back to their positions in the lower energy level. As they return, the energy that was previously absorbed is now emitted in the form of electromagnetic energy. This energy can be displayed in the form of visible light. The main purpose/objective of this lab was to observe the characteristic colors produced by certain metallic ions when they are vaporized in a flame.…

For the unknown light source, it had almost every color, so it might have been be mercury because they have similar color beams and their color from the naked eye appeared as purple, which mercury, a light blue, is very close to in terms of it's color on the spectrum. For the unknown flame crystals, it may NH4+ because the colors that appeared are very similar to the crystals. Next, chemicals have to be heated in the flame for the color to emit because heat adds energy to the substance making the electrons more excited, allowing for the electrons to transition faster. Then, the method of lighting the substance on fire is far better than using the spectroscope. Not only does the fire burn it's colors more obvious, but also, light pollution tremendously…

To achieve financial success in society has forced people to lose sight of family value and morality. Capitalism, the idea to work more to become more financially successful has had a negative affect on family and personal lives. People strive to spend more hours in the work place as opposed to spending quality time with their family. “From the Frying Pan into the Fire” by Arlie Hochschild she emphasizes the change in family values that is due to the pressure of being apart of a capitalist society. Pyromania: "A morbid compulsion to set fires." (Macdonald 4) This term is often used to describe anyone who enjoys watching and setting fires, although the true meaning of the word is a psychological disorder. People affected by this disorder use fire to vent their anger or stress from their everyday life. They will set anything close at hand on fire and take pleasure in the way the fire dances around the object it is quickly smoldering and utterly destroying. A pyromaniac however, is not the same thing as an arsonist. The Pyromaniac has a mental disorder which usually begins at a very young age and gradually fades as the subject ages, or in some cases becomes more intense.…
