Through the use of a gothic, yet ‘realistic’ setting as a framing device James immediately encourages his readers to be expectant of the paranormal. The prologue opens with an unknown narrator who the reader considers trustworthy due his detachment from the events being described to him, “the tale held us around the fire”. Douglas appears to a critical reader as being a far less reliable narrator due to his emotional attachment to the protagonist. Douglas’ devotion is revealed through dialogue where he describes the governess as “the most agreeable woman” and someone to “arch”.…

His fingers stabbed and prodded at the hollows there, continuing over his stomach, where he wrenched at the pallid, translucent skin, as if he grasped evil itself. Months of starvation had eventuated in a sunken stomach, covered by mottled skin. Malevolence gleamed in his eyes, like blue oceans of melancholy and hatred, as he regarded his roughly bitten finger nails chafing at the tender skin of his thighs. His thighs were almost as emaciated as his stomach, two skeletal twigs with a gaping chasm between them. As he gouged at the non-existent fat on his withered body, he was immersed in revulsion for himself.…

He put the glass to his lips, and drank at one gulp. A cry followed; he reeled, staggered, clutched at the table and held on, staring with injected eyes, gasping with open mouth; and as I looked there came, I thought, a change—he seemed to swell—his face became suddenly black and the features seemed to melt and alter—and at the next moment, I had sprung to my feet and leaped back against the wall, my arm raised to shield me from that prodigy, my mind submerged in terror.…

A topic often brought up in class discussion throughout the semester was sexuality and the many aspects involved; changing my personal perception of sexuality. In September I believed sexuality was just the act of sex and or being promiscuous, but it’s a much broader subject. The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter is a re-mastered version of the fairy tale Blue Beard with a sexual spin. It perfectly depicts the ideal image of sexuality to one who is more innocent than someone more experienced then alters it and shows us its variations after they’ve gained experience. This essay will explore the deception, dominance and violence surrounding the sexual relationship between the heroine and Marquis. Angela explores the aspect…

A few seconds passed before the subject came out of the door. Those seconds felt like hours for the audience members in the amphitheater and felt like years for the man whose fate rested upon the subject, which was about to appear before him. The gaping black hole that filled the room behind the door smelled of tiger blood but that was no indication of which subject harbored the room. The audience remained completely silent, except for a few children’s muffled cries as their parents put their hands over the children’s mouths quickly, afraid of being spotted by the guards and persecuted on the spot. As the door swung fully open now, the man began backing up slowly. Whichever fate he had decided for himself, he was not prepared for. His footsteps could be heard from the top row of the amphitheater and the sound of the beads of sweat that trickled down his face to the sandy ground would be heard if one listened closely enough.…

The dark-haired officer’s spicy scent infused the air, and he breathed in the intoxicating bouquet, drawing courage from the familiarity of the masculine aroma. A narrow shaft of sunlight radiated through the awning window, the shimmering beam shining directly onto Booker’s face. With a moan, he fought his way back to consciousness, and opening his eyes, he squinted against the light of the bright rays. A bone-shaking immediately shiver ran down the length of his body, and pushing himself to a sitting position, he drew up his knees and wrapped his arms around his torso. The temperature in the room had dropped rapidly during the night, but he had remained blissfully unaware due in part to head injury he had sustained from the force of the ceramic phone smashing into his skull. The memory of the assault returned in vivid color and lifting his hand to his head, he gingerly explored the lump on his…
