Purpose of Education

The Purpose of Education and its role towards an individual’s life and the Reforms in present education System

In most of the dictionary education is defined as the imparting and acquiring of knowledge through teaching and learning. It’s is something one learns in schools and college, but I think that’s not true. Education is not only offered in school but it is journey which begins at birth and for most of us it has already begun. Education is to not only equip people with the knowledge of the world they have to live in but is to enhance and build up the character because It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men. When we meet and greet people it’s not written on one’s face that how educated he or she is or how many bachelors or masters they have. He will assume about one’s personality by having an interaction with him. It teaches you how deal in your ever day’s life and is to learn from your experiences. Unfortunately if not implied my words are as good as a closed book which is never been read. I would like to present some factual data which would sound very astonishing to everybody surprised me too. According to the statistics every year almost 8,300 students drop out of high school making it 3.03 million students ever year. The U.S. which once had one of the highest graduation rates of any developed country has slipped and now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries in the world. Only 68 percent of the students make it to college in 2008. However, the unemployment rate for high school grads versus enrolled college students was 21.1% to 8% in 2008. In other words, college Education even makes it easier to find a job before you hold a degree. So United States is becoming a nation which has the highest high school dropout rate amongst the world’s developed country. The only reason is because of the present educational system which is still implementing educational methods used back in 1950’s and 1960’s. The educational curriculum is forced on students and so rather than learning it students try to run away from it. The teaching methods needs to be changed and the Government should be spending more money towards education rather than cutting down the budgets. Government should organize workshops and different seminars for the teachers to help them polish their skills. Aristotle once said,” those who educate children well are more to be honored than they who produce them”. There should be more vocational and liberal arts school so that we can promote creativity. The most powerful tool a student has is its imagination. So discouraging students to use their creativity and imagination is making them run away from learning. As albert Einstein said, “Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere”.
I would like to end by leaving a question for everybody that what is the part of education in one’s life and how it transforms one. John Dewey said, Education, therefore, is a process of living, Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself”.
