In the 1600’s, the New England colony devolved very rapidly. The political, economic, and social development of the colonies was highly influenced by the Puritans, who helped find most of the colonies in the region after emigrating there from England. The Puritans strict values and ideas helped shape the colonies greatly in several ways. They believed in a representative government which later on became an essential part of the United States’ government. Economically, the idea of fair priced goods also came from the Puritans. Strict values in church, religion, and community were all Puritan customs that helped social development in the 1600’s.…

In the 1600’s many Puritans moved to America for religious freedom. For many years Puritanism flourished as a religion, but as the years went on, it began to self-destruct. What is the first thing that we as Americans think about when we hear Puritanism? For many, religion is the main idea that comes to mind. The Puritans were a very devoutly religious group as a whole. Religion had a strong influence on all of their actions. And they often used religion to explain things they themselves couldn’t. William Bradford writes, “These troubles being blown over. . . they put to sea again with a prosperous wind. And I many not omit here a special work of God’s Providence.” They often attributed miraculous things to the hand of God. At the foundation of their religion is this concept of predestination;…
The Massachusetts Bay Colony was an English settlement in North America in the early 1600’s. It was formed by Puritan settlers fleeing religious persecution in England. The lands which became the Massachusetts Bay Colony had previously been inhabited by Native Indians. The Company of Massachusetts Bay received a charter to start a settlement in the New World in 1629. The charter granted the company the right to establish a settlement. The passengers of the “Arbella” who left England in 1630 with their new charter had great expectations. They could not practice their religion beliefs in England, and thus, came to Massachusetts for religious freedom and purification. The Massachusetts Bay Colony became the only English chartered colony whose board of governors did not reside in England. This independence helped the settlers to maintain their Puritan religious practices with very little oversight by the King, and Anglican Church.…
They Puritans goal in instituting their religion was to purify Christianity. It is unlikely that they realized just how influential they would be on New England culture in the years to come. Though many Americans might not enjoy this fact, the social and religious ideas that the Puritans held were essential in the shaping of New England colonies. The ways in which the Puritans socially, economically, and politically applied their religion into daily life greatly changed all the people of New England, for better or for worse. This is proven in how people reacted to their strict rules, the Puritan relations with the Native Americans, and in general their church centered society.…

While slavery increased the chance of an Indian rebellion, the Puritans believed that slavery was an acceptable option. They believed this because slavery had its advantages, such as increasing profit that helped pay for the war. Also, the Puritans felt that slavery gave Indians a reason to be a friend rather than an enemy. Lastly, slavery was thought to be a better option for captives rather than execution. Additionally, although it could be debated by both parties their reasoning as to why they treated women this way, women were treated differently throughout the war by different groups of people.…
The Scarlet Letter, a book written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a book based in a Puritan society. If you look at how people live today and their actions in their everyday life and compare it to how Puritans or the Amish live, I believe that some people would be in shock that there are people who live like they do. And these people who live unlike us don’t think that their way of living is strange or weird. In a Puritan society the Bible provided the way of living and the people living in the community wanted to be a city on the hill. The Amish and the Puritans are two very different ways of living but, they also have multiple characteristics in common. Living in a world where there was very limited technologies, different dressing style, and different ways of education is greatly different compared to the modern world.…
The article begins by stating that the puritans came to America to set a model for the Anglican Church. In order to accomplish this, the puritans had to have many laws that were supposed to be met with harsh punishment. Among these laws were many against sexual crimes, which were among the most frequent crimes. Despite the numerous laws discouraging adultery and other sexual actions the puritans did not discourage sex, on the contrary the puritans believed that “the use of the marriage bed is founded in man’s nature”(p 18) and that if people were denied sex that it would lead to other, worse crimes such as bestiality. Sex was actually encouraged inside of marriage so much that it could be considered slander if one man said that another was not having sex regularly with his wife.…

The biggest part of the Puritans lives revolved around the church and the community which made for the majority of their Social life.…
A good reputation was what every Puritan wanted. This way you can be overlooked as being less likely to be a witch. No one was allowed to work on Sunday and everyone was expected to attend church daily. Anything a citizen does is known by the town. John Proctor and Reverend Parris are examples of characters…
