Purification of a Mixture
Assignment Purification of a Mixture

INTRODUCTION

Mixtures obtained from the biosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere or atmosphere can be industrially separated into their constituents. Petrol for example is obtained from crude oil found in the lithosphere.

RESEARCH SKILLS

When researching this assignment you will access a variety of secondary resources including web sites and textbooks.

Please include a detailed bibliography

You should also consider both the validity and reliability of your sources.

Reliability
How consistent is the information with information from other reputable sources?
Validity
How was the information gathered? Do the findings relate to the hypothesis or problem? Do you consider the authors and publishers of the information have sufficient credentials to be trustworthy?

TASK

Prepare a short report describing the industrial separation processes used on crude oil obtained from the lithosphere. (max length – 2 pages, max file size – 2MB)

MARKING CRITERIA

In your assignment make sure you include the following points:

include details of the separation process used identify the property of the mixture that is used in the separation process
Use a table to identify the products of separation and their potential uses include a labelled diagram showing a fractionating column describe the possible and probable uses of any waste products discuss the validity of the secondary sources you used discuss the reliability of the secondary sources you used

The initial mass of unknown # 12-Green was recorded. The first substance separated from the mixture was iron based on its unique magnetic property. A magnet was used to extract the iron from unknown # 12-Green and the mass of the iron fillings was recorded. The next substance separated from the mixture was ammonium chloride based on its unique ability to sublimate. Unknown # 12-Green was heated with a Bunsen burner in a fume hood (note the special precaution) until the ammonium chloride was entirely extracted. The mass of the mixture was obtained to determine the amount of ammonium chloride lost due to sublimation and the mass of ammonium chloride in the mixture was recorded. Next, the extraction separation technique was used to separate the two remaining substances, silicon dioxide and sodium chloride. Extraction is used to remove a substance with a greater solubility from a substance with a lower solubility. In this case, silicon dioxide is not soluble in water while sodium chloride is. Therefore, approximately 20mL of deionized water was added to the mixture. The mixture was stirred until the sodium chloride was dissolved and the silicon dioxide had settled to the bottom of the dish. The filtration separation technique was used to separate the silicon dioxide from the sodium chloride suspended in water. The silicon dioxide collected in the filter paper was placed in the oven until it was…

Upon heating under pressure, the large paraffin molecules break down into recoverable gaseous and liquid substances resembling petroleum. This property makes oil shale a potentially important source of synthetic crude oil. The potential yield of petroleum products depends on the type of kerogen. There are four types of kerogen, type I is known as lignite, which are derived from algal or bacterial remains, are relatively rare but have the highest oil potential among the four types. These materials formed in fine-grained organic rich muds deposited under anoxic conditions in quiet shallow water environments, such as lagoons and lakes. Type II are known as exinite which are the most common and are usually formed in marine environments, exinites are mixtures of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and microbial organic matter under reducing conditions, but they also be formed from higher plant debris. Exinite yield hydrocarbons lower than lignite but it still produced oil shales of commercial value and sourced a large number of oil and gas fields (Kilops and Kilops 1993). The third type is known is vitrinite, it is…
