Aim:
To separate a mixture of carboxylic acid and a neutral substance by treatment with aqueous sodium hydroxide and purifying the carboxylic acid, measuring the melting points of the neutral and the acid components.
METHOD:
A mixture of( 5g) Carboxylic acid and neutral compound were separated by adding 2 mol dm-3 sodium hydroxide (25cm3) to the mixture, which separated the water soluble sodium from the water insoluble neutral component, by filtration. The solid at the filter was washed with 10cm3of water twice and the solid was dried and the melting point was measured.
Concentrated hydrochloric acid was then added to the alkaline filtrate to recover the acid component, the solution was then cooled in an ice bath, and the precipitate was filtered. Hydrochloric acid was again added to the filtrate to make sure all the acid component has precipitated. It was then crystallized from water by boiling and letting it cool again.
RESULTS
Mass of the mixture taken =5.752g Mass of the neutral component =2.261g Mass of the carboxylic acid component =1.483g mp of the neutral component =81⁰c-83⁰c mp of the acid component
OBSERVATION:
It was observed that the mass of the neutral component was higher than the mass of the carboxylic acid component.
CONCLUSION:
The difference between the mass of the starting mixture and the resulting masses of the acid component and neutral component combined may have been caused by the loss of some of the solids during purification, as they may have been left in filter papers and beakers. A measurement was not obtained for the melting point of the acid component because of time restrictions.

    The identification of the melting point of the organic acid was done to find another characteristic of the acid and to test the purity of the recrystallized pure acid. A 2-4 mm layer of unknown sample was placed into a capillary tube sealed on one end. Then the capillary tube was inserted into the side a Bibby Sterlin device. The plateau was set to 200°C on the melting point apparatus. Once the plateau temperature was reached, the sample was watched carefully. When the sample first began to melt and when it was fully melted was recorded. These numbers were the range of the melting point. A slow melting point of the unknown organic acid and a standard sample was completed next. A new plateau was set about 10°C lower than the observed melting point of the unknown sample. This time once the plateau was reached, the heating was no more than 1°C per minute. This gave a much more accurate read of both melting points. If the standard did not melt in the range listed on the label of the bottle, that meant the machine was not working properly.     The purpose of this lab is to study some of the physical properties of two types of solids – ionic and molecular. The samples used are sodium chloride (ionic) and camphor (molecular). The physical properties studied are odour, hardness, melting point, solubility in water and solubility in 2-propanol. It is observed that some of the physical properties of sodium chloride are no odours, hard, a high melting point, soluble in water and insoluble in 2-propanol; some of the physical properties of camphor are a strong odour, soft, a low melting point, insoluble in water and soluble in 2-propanol.
