Puerto Rico Paradise Vacation
The children of Puerto Rico inspired me to achieve mine goals in life. I know that sounds confusing since I am not of Hispanic decent, so let me explain. The summer of sophomore year, I traveled on a mission trip to Puerto Rico with my school. I visioned the trip as a paradise vacation. However, I was wrong. Though I encountered many experiences, there is one that I will never forget. After long hours of working in the community, we ended the day by visiting a boys’ orphanage for mentally and physically disabled. Upon arrival, the kids were lined up at the gate waving and smiling at us ready to give us hugs even though they did not know us at all. While at the orphanage, a man outside was selling cakes and we decided to buy some for the boys.

Luis Chavez is an upstanding young man who was also one of the most inspiring teenagers I had ever met in my life. I had the pleasure of working with Luis while I was employed with City Year Chicago, an AmeriCorps program. Luis had done volunteer service with City Year’s Young Heroes Program for years as a middle school student. In 2008, he joined the City Heroes Program, the high school equivalent of Young Heroes, during my term as a Senior Corps Member and Program Leader for City Heroes. Not only was Luis a consistent participant, he was a leader among his peers. He met with us weekly to plan activities and contribute…

Puerto Rico has been a U.S. territory for 115 years, yet Puerto Ricans remain second-class citizens. If it becomes a state, Puerto Ricans will no longer be exempt from Federal income tax and even more people will be forced on to the public’s benefits paid by the government. There are some positive truths to look at also, as journalist Catherine Lozada points out: “Puerto Rico costs the U.S. over $22 billion a year. However, as a state it will contribute nearly $2 billion to the U.S. treasury each year.” There will always be that one question which longs to be answered, and that is: What’s keeping Puerto Rico in Political limbo?…

Holidays: Three Wiseman’s Day which is January 6 is when kids gather grass into a box and leave it under their beds for the camels so the wise men leave presents and La Noche de San Juan( San Juan Night)or Saint John’s Night which is exactly midnight between June 23 and 24, on the eve of his birth day, people walk backward into the ocean and fall backwards into it. This past summer I had the incredible opportunity to go on a mission trip in Ecuador where I worked in an orphanage partaking in labor work, as well as, traveled out into the cities bordering Quito to organize VBSs (vacation bible schools)in startup churches . In beginning of the trip I expected the work I would participate in would be life changing to those in its wake. My expectations were highly set and the outcome did not match up; in fact, the outcome was quite the opposite. In the short week I spent in Ecuador, I realized almost immediately that the problems that needed to be mended were much larger than a group of fifty people could overcome in one week. There was so much need, and an insufficient amount of resources to provide for it. Nevertheless, I was…

Puerto Rico, an island situated between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, lies just east of the Dominican Republic. With an area of 9,104 square kilometers (3,515 square miles), Puerto Rico is almost 3 times the size of the state of Rhode Island. As an island commonwealth with a coastline of 501 kilometers (311 miles), Puerto Rico shares no borders with other nations. San Juan, the capital, is located on the northeastern shore of the main island; there are also 3 small islands included in the Commonwealth: Vieques and Culebra to the east and Mona to the west. San Juan's location makes it one of the Caribbean Sea's most valuable ports. The Mona Passage, off Puerto Rico's west shore, is also a crucial shipping route to the Panama Canal. Major cities include Guánica, Playa de Ponce, and Guayanilla, all 3 along the southern coast, in east-to-west order. Puerto Rico's most important cities are port cities, vital to the Puerto Rican economy.…

Throughout your middle school and high school career is when most people find out what their true identity and you go through events that really make a difference in your life. In the summer of 2017, my youth group decided to go on a missions trip to Peru. Going into the Peru trip, I didn't know what to expect but I was hoping to see change in myself. We went to an area in Lima, Peru called Jicamarca. I had seen pictures of JIcamarca and how run down it was, but I still felt like I had no idea what I was walking into. At first I was so nervous that people wouldn’t accept us into their little village but once we stopped at our first home we were immediately accepted. The people of Jicamarca are amazing. Each and every person I met was kind and…

My experience living in Puerto Rico has critically shaped who I am, and how I relate myself with others. The situations families across the island faced and how they responded to them in their daily lives and in elections has had a clear effect on the shaping of the economic situation in Puerto Rico, and the policy of public officials, something that is critical to my interests of politics and economics. Furthermore, how I personally adjusted to these hardships…

A couple of months ago my friend Valerie asked me to help her on this project to bring Models of United Nations to kids on the slums. I was a little bit skeptical at first. I thought it was risky and it might not have great impact in them as these children often drop out of school and get involved in gangs or start working to sustain their children and spouses. Valerie insisted and I gave it a try. That day changed my life. I thought I was going to be received by a rather hostile crowd, yet, my audience was warm and welcoming. I thought I would be facing disinterest, but I saw a group of curious, engaged youths. These were the kids of the working class. Some of the girls were pregnant, yet they were determined to keep up on their studies. Some others were seniors and the first ones to ever graduate in their families. In them, I saw a hopeful, working youth that wanted to move forward in life and after meeting them I felt compelled to speak out against the materialistic views that dehumanized them. After seeing these youths face to face and listening to their struggles I realized I could not keep quiet. Soon after I met these teenagers someone in a family reunion started insinuating that…
