Puck In A Mid-Summer Night's Dream
Hello, Ian, Puck in the play A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream is an extraordinary character. He does seem to be a bit mischievous and uses his magical powers to disturb mortals. Puck is like the Court Jester who serves Oberon, King of the fairies. Oberon did task Puck to go and get the “flower” that provided magical juice to put in the eyes of Titania, which made her fall in love with the first person she sees when she wakes up. Puck also had other mischievous, magical things he had in store for the Athenians and the rude mechanicals. Puck was a very charming character in this play, as I was reading it, I found myself wondering when Puck would turn up next. Thanks that was an excellent post.

In Fitzgerlad’s story a young man falls in love with a woman and despite trying, he fails to win her over and winds up losing her forever. When comparing the plot with more modern day fairy tales, there is some discussion. In most fairy tales they end happily ever after with the prince and the princess together. In Winter Dreams, however, young Dexter doesn’t wind up being with his love, Judy, in the end. Judy marries another man after Dexter rejects her on their final night together.…

In A Midsummer Night 's Dream, Shakespeare creates in Bottom, Oberon, and Puck distinctive characters who represent different aspects of himself. Like Bottom, Shakespeare aspires to rise socially; he has ambitions, and interacts with the queen, however marginally. Through Bottom, Shakespeare mocks these pretensions within himself. Then again, Shakespeare also resembles Oberon, controlling the magic we see on the stage; unseen, he and Oberon pull the strings that make the characters act as they do and say what they say. And finally, Shakespeare is like Puck, standing back from the other characters, able to see their weaknesses and laugh at them, and enjoying some mischief…

    F. Scott Fitzgerald lived during the time of the Great Depression, where money was low in almost every household. This pushed Fitzgerald’s favorite topic of a poor boy becoming rich into the American public. Dexter, the main character in “Winter Dreams” went from being an average boy that was living a good life to a rich man because of the love he had for a wealthy girl named Judy Jones. Through, “Winter Dreams” Fitzgerald explained the major events of his own life. Although many critics believed that Fitzgerald had a great talent in writing and he lived a great life, some believe that he wasted the talent that was given to him by drinking and shortening his life every day. Many believe that he was responsible for his own death.…

Gow has set up a simple story set in the late 1960’s about three different families with their own sets of issues taking a holiday at the end of the school year. Although this particular journey may seem to be a physical journey, it’s simply a metaphor for the inner journey that each character from each family takes to reach a stage of restoration and hope. From the very beginning of the play Gow incorporates “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” into his own work by beginning his own drama with the ending of Shakespeare’s play with the character Tom playing “Puck”. This is extremely significant as Gow uses his play as a comparison or rather an appropriation of Shakespeare’s drama using Tom as the centre of activity and the character that initiates action. This interweaves beautifully with the character Puck as he is the fairy that directs the other fairies in Shakespeare’s drama. Gow has shown his audience who the main character is and by placing Tom in the role of “Puck” he tells viewers that it is Tom who is going to be the centre of the journeys taking place in the…

Judy Jones was born wealthy and she was attracted to men with power and money. Aside from her physical beauty, her status gave her many social options. She was vain and liked to be seen with a procession of men. Dexter was one of them. The seductive mannerisms in her voice had a magical effect on men and it drew their attention. Her voice was not lady-like but her tone was deep. Later on Dexter remembered that unique voice. Fitzgerald wrote in the short story, “He imagined her husky voice over the telephone…”. “The smile which turns down the corner of her mouth in a half pout” also made men wild. Judy had complete control over the men with whom she associated, and it made her feel not only powerful, but alive. She controlled them like puppets on a string, including Dexter. When men lost interest, she knew how to win back their affection for her. Her seductive voice and mannerisms contributed to her emotional power over these men. Her selfish tenacity emerged as she went after whatever she wanted of their affections.…

Sexuality as a theme in A Midsummer nights dream is one of the more blatantly obvious undertones of the play and the need to promote heterosexuality in the face of perceived homosexual attractions is personified in the battle between Oberon and TItania over the child from India. The story of the “lovely boy” is told from two points of view, Puck's and Titania's. Puck tells a companion fairy that Oberon is “passing fell and…

This shows how Oberon is telling Puck to put love potion on Demetrius’ eyes and for him to not wake him from sleep. It also shows puck thinking about how lysander and Demetrius will compete for the same girl which shows that he has put the potion on Demetrius. This quote supports the thesis because since Demetrius was bewitched into love with Helena. That proves the only way he will stop loving Helena is if the love potion is removed and under the circumstances that only one fairy can do that it is unlikely that he will end the relationship with Helena.…

The short story, “Winter Dreams”, by F. Scott Fitzgerald holds lasting impact today, mainly for the author’s ability to weave love, desire, emotion, and the moral fiber of an individual into a story. The underlying theme is centered on how charisma can drives a person to lose sight of their true goal in life, thereby finding pleasure in selfish gain which results in eventual loss. I will develop an analysis of characterization and theme in this famed short story that is as relevant today as it was when it was written in 1922.…

I'm tired and restless after a mentally draining day at school. There are blurred lights and angry drivers all around me as the tires of my car grind against the cold concrete. My dad pulls into the back parking lot and signals for me to get out of the car. I groan, knowing that I am in for a long practice, and slowly drag myself out of the front seat. I lug my hockey bags out of the trunk, and they become another nagging reminder of the grueling workout I'm about to face. My dad speeds away and I'm left alone, staring at the large, brightly lit building looming over me. The rink is in a low-income area, and beyond the cold, hard metal fence lies a dangerous neighborhood. The night air is warm and still,…

“Give me your hands if we be friends, and Robin shall restore Amends. ‘ ( Act 1, Sc 1) This signifies the beginning journey of reconciliation and acceptance through use of intertextuality. Gow has made cross reference with Shakespeare. Tom’s role as Puck, infiltrated from a ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’, encapsulates his significance in the overall play. Puck’s power to restore and heal alludes and soaks into Tom’s character as his awareness of both life and death become the base of power for a catalyst change in others.…

Throughout the play A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare uses both fate and free will to present his philosophy towards the nature of love. The characters struggle through confusion and conflicts to be with the one they love. Although the course of their love did not go well, love ultimately triumphs over all at the end of the play. The chaos reaches a climax causing great disruption among the lovers. However, the turmoil is eventually resolved by Puck, who fixes his mistake. The confusion then ends and the lovers are with their true love. Throughout the play Shakespeare's philosophy was displayed in various scenes, and his concept still holds true in modern society.…
