Public Speaking Self-Reflection
In order for public speaking to become a skill, there are a few areas in which I need to improve to make it a suitable strength. Public speaking is not a weakness for me but I would like to transform it into one of my strengths. During my two minute presentation, I found that in order to do this I need to improve my ability to perform long speeches without hesitation, maintain eye contact, and be energetic in front of an audience showing more overview what topic I am discussing.
In class I plan to work on take the steps of improving my verbal communication in front of my peers. While talking I plan to avoid using filler words that will drag a speech on and draw less interest from my audience. Being able to talk among my peers by keeping good eye contact on them at all times. By doing this it allows me the freedom to walk around and not be completely immobile when giving a speech. Understanding how to organize my work to have a solid overview on what I will be saying when presenting.
With this class I hope it takes me to a whole new level on how to talk to people and how to control my emotions when in front of any audience regardless who it is. By allowing myself this sense of understand and awareness will help give me a sense of calmness giving me the ability to stand up and say what I need to say when giving a speech or if I am in a crowd listening to someone speak to offer my views on what is being said.
In order for myself to improve my weak areas to accomplish my goals I will have to do the following: first write a speech and review it, next go over the speech many times in a place I feel safe performing the speech. After this find a mirror, use this to help reduce my fear when speaking in front of people. If this doesn’t work for me I can always use my family to help me. This will be continued to repeat itself until I felt I was ready to

My first skill is about how I struggle when communicating in verbal presentations. I’m confident when it comes to verbal communication in conversations or interviews. However when being in front on large audiences I find it hard to be as confident. During college I never needed to prepare my own presentation and present them. It was a new experience for me to get into groups or prepare a presentation by myself in front of my peers. I have experienced around 5 presentations now and I feel I am becoming more confident in myself and don’t get as worried when I know I have to do one. However I still feel like it’s a weakness when it comes to my skills and would like develop myself to become clear and confident when doing presentations. An example of how I no I’m doing better in this skill is that my grades have become higher. I feel I’m weak when doing presentations because I experience feeling nervous and forget to say things when I know what I’m talking about, so it comes across unprofessional and weak.…

Watching my speech, I noticed many delivery aspects that I did not realize about myself before, both vocally and non-verbally. Several vocal techniques I used, such as pacing myself when I spoke as well as using the appropriate volume and pitch for the class size were executed well. Also, non-verbally I used my hands to gesture while maintaining great eye-contact with the audience. I had some strength to my speech but there were some things that I could have and plan on doing to improve my speeches in the future. For example, a vocal aspect I noticed that I did not do well on was pausing during my speech. I would literally go from one topic or example to the next. Also, non-verbal improvements that I will make will consist of utilizing the space more and making sure I am not stagnant in one area or spot. I did move from one side to the other but I only did this once and in the future I will move around more.…

My strengths as a speaker are that I can get all of my information out. Other than that I do not feel that I have any more strengths in public speaking. My weaknesses in public speaking are that I get very nervous and because of it my voice becomes shaky and I have a difficult time controlling my breathing. Almost every time I would give presentations in high school I would have to take a pause from speaking to take a deep breath because I would forget to breath. Another weakness I have is that I tend to talk really quietly and I have been constantly told to speak up during my presentations. I believe that I have more weaknesses than strengths as a speaker because I tend to focus on the negative instead of the…

For one, I will change the fact that I use go-to words a lot in presenting to audiences. This includes phrases like “basically”, “I mean”, and “like”. Also, I should make more eye contact with the audience instead of looking at my notes for reference. Finally, I have to practice my presentation in front of a mirror or record myself beforehand because I need to work on my pauses and know my lines without having to bring out any notecards. By doing these three things, it would help my presentation skills in front of audiences a lot and would give me more confidence when…

In being afraid of speaking publicly I have a problem with my hands shaking, dry mouth, inability to make effective eye contact with audience members while remembering my speech, and using fluctuations in my voice. Honestly, I feel to be good at public speaking, I need to work on each one of these issues. To keep people engaged and interested in what you are speaking about, you need to be able to make eye contact, not speak in a monotone voice, and it distracts from the speech if you are seeing someone shaking and struggling to remember their words while…

In the past, I have participated in a lot of classes and training dealing with many different topics, but unfortunately, public speaking and/ or communications was not one of them. In fact, the last class that I took even relatively close to this one was in junior high school. In some sense, I guess that this could be thought of as a good thing, because now I can learn at a college level to begin with.

My goals for this class are fairly numerous, but all are based on all around knowledge and improvement of public speaking in a general sense. I want to be able to get up in front of a group of people and deliver a message in a way that makes people want to listen. I'm planning a career in the field of psychology, and as much as I may not like it, I think public speaking will definitely show its face many times. My specific goals for the course include improving on my stance, speaking more clearly, and improving on my fear of speaking in front of a large group.

After reviewing my videotaped speeches, I have noticed that, among other things, I am constantly fidgeting and doing something with my hands like playing with my note cards or something. Also, I am clearly not comfortable with standing up there. Although it is not overly visible on the tape, I can tell that I look very nervous, and I tend to stutter a little and lose my place and focus in the middle of the speeches frequently. I really don't understand why speaking in front of the class bothers me so much. If I were to give the speech from my desk, even though everyone would still be looking at me, I think that I could do a much better job and be more relaxed as well.

I think that improving on these previous aspects will give me enough experience and confidence to at least have a working knowledge and ability to successfully speak publicly. Although my career will probably not involve an immense amount of public speaking, it will require some, and this course will surely provide valuable…
