1.0 PUBLIC SECTOR BIG DATA ANALYTICS INITIATIVE: MALAYSIA’S PERSPECTIVE

1.1 SUMMARY

The Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) and Malaysia Development Corporation (MDeC) will be implementing four Big Data Analysis (BDA) pioneer projects in the public sector this year. According to MAMPU director general Datuk Wira Omar Kaseh, MAMPU will be looking after the BDA implementation at the public sector, while MDeC will focus on the BDA development of the private sector, namely the local entrepreneurs.

Among the various initiatives that have been implemented by MAMPU were the 1Gov*Net, 1GovUC, 1GovCloud, Public Sector Data Centre and the Digital Document Management System. These initiatives are the platform for the implementation of the Big Data and Open Data at the public sector.

The implementation of the Public Sector Data Centre was aimed at improving security and for cost reduction at management level through collaborative, consolidated and integrated approach. At present, there are 125 agencies benefitting from the services. The 1Gov*Net, on the other hand, comprises an integrated network infrastructure that has centralized management with emphasis on security for the public sector. The present global scenario and researches have proven the importance of the Big Data initiative as a device that helps in effective and good decision making.

1.2 ANALYSIS

Big data analytics refers to the process of collecting, organizing and analyzing large sets of data to discover patterns and other useful information. Big data analytics not only help to understand the information contained within the data, but it will also help identify the data that is most important to the business and future business decisions. With the right big data analytics platforms in place, an enterprise can boost sales, increase efficiency, and improve operations, customer service and risk management.
