The key aspects of legislation, regulatory requirements and codes of practice which relate to my role specifically as a trainer at St John Ambulance are varied.
They include, but are not limited to:
• The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974
As an employee of St John Ambulance I need to adhere to the Health and Safety at work Act (1974). Gravell, A (2001) Preparing to Teach in The Lifelong Learning Sector, learning matters say:
“the Act imposes obligations on staff within an organization commensurate with their role and responsibility”
As a manager it is important that I make my staff aware of their responsibilities to adhere to the policy as well as making sure that I adhere to the policy. Failure by my employees or myself to understand and work with the policy could result in injury or an accident.
• RIDDOR - Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995
These Regulations puts duties on employers, the self-employed and the Responsible Person in control of work premises to report workplace accidents, occupational diseases and near misses. At St John we have an accident book and a report form which must be filled out for every incident. For near misses, these are also sent to Head Office as they collate the information to see if there is a pattern. If they establish a pattern then new rules are implemented.
• We also have to adhere to the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority/Service (AALA) Regulations which encompasses the 2004 and The Activity Centre (Young Persons’ Safety) Act 1995. AALA came into existence in 1996 following the Lime Bay disaster.
