At one point throughout history white people seemed to be the discriminatory group against other races, religions, and cultures. The first real problem started with slavery and discrimination against African Americans. The right to be seen as equal despite skin color was the main focus at that time in history. Over the years right to free religious views and customs became the next big issue and then, as time went on, discrimination shifted from color and customs towards gender differences. Johnson stated, “We should not have the belief that things have always been the way we’ve known them to be” (128). Discrimination problems have constantly changed throughout history and, for some people, dealing with these issues has been more difficult than what others had to go through. Today, even though there may be discrimination against different races, genders, or religions views the issues in which people dealt with in the past are not the same as they are now. “The only thing we can count on is change, then it’s hard to see why we should believe for a minute that any kind of social system is permanent” (Johnson, 129). As people become more educated on the problem of discrimination society began to adapt new views towards these social injustices. The only downside is that, due to human nature, people will always be looking for inequalities in society. The reality is that there will most…

Why discrimination and racism is still an issue in the United States? In “The New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander she discusses that race and discrimination still exist in today’s society and even though it seems that we are all equal in reality we are not equal to one another. Alexander explains that Martin Luther king Jr wanted a radical reconstruction in our society in the 1960s so he can try to implement an equal society between poor blacks and whites throughout the country.…

Ever since the early 1600’s prejudice and discrimination has been a big factor in this country. This all was started by the transatlantic slave trade which was the mass migration of Africans to the Caribbean, Europe, South America and to North America. Africans from Africa’s west coast were piled on in ships to the western hemisphere and Europe. The first slaves were brought to the Jamestown settlement in 1619 from the western coast of Africa. These slaves were forced to do hard labor without pay for many centuries. Ever since then, America and a majority of other countries in the world has had or maybe even still have problems with prejudice in the 21st century. Prejudice can occur between any race that is on this planet. Police brutality should be a bigger issue in this country because it is raising racial tensions, people are starting to riot, and innocent people are getting killed by senseless acts of violence (“Understanding Prejudice”).…

Many things can cause discrimination. The main thing, I would say, is it is a learned behavior. This means these people who discriminate were probably raised to feel this way towards a certain group of people. What you learn growing up can stay with you for the rest of your life. Here you are a defenseless child who knows nothing but are told to hate a certain group of people, you are going to listen because you were raised to. Then, when you’re older, you will automatically discriminate against this group because you were told to. There is discrimination against people of other races because they have a different skin color which makes them “different.” There is discrimination against gay people because we don’t understand why they “choose” to be that way. These are just a couple examples of what causes discrimination.…

Discrimination is one of the world’s major concerns today. Many people are not aware of how much it still exists in our schools, work places, and society. Discrimination has indeed changed many lives and many people’s way of thinking about other ethnic groups and religions. Discrimination is looked at differently depending on the person. Discrimination also leads to people being racist against how one thinks about something, such as religion. I feel that discrimination is a plague in our society that only causes destruction. To some, being prejudice is a way of life, and for others, it is an offensive term representing closed-mindedness. Being discriminative or being racist develops from different cultural values, ethnic backgrounds, as well as physical appearances.…
