Psychology - Serial Killers
b) Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer (May 21, 1960 – November 28, 1994) was an American rapist and serial killer; who during 1978 and 1991 raped, killed and dismembered 17 boys and young men. In his later murders, there was evidence of cannibalism, necrophilia and permanent preservation of body parts. He was found sane at his trial, and was sentenced with 15 terms of lifetime imprisonment at Columbia Correctional Institution. On 28th November, 1994, Dahmer was beaten to death by an inmate. [1] c) Jeffrey’s mother, Joyce, had troubles during her pregnancy with Jeffrey, resulting in her having to take various drugs. This could have had a biological effect on Jeffrey’s brain during foetal development, resulting in perhaps a deficit in cognitive functions. It is stated that Jeffrey had troubles with social interactions as a child growing up, and struggled to form relationships, so perhaps his reason for killing his victims was due to a lack of being able to form a bond with them, even after they had sexual intercourse. When he was younger, his father said he was “oddly thrilled” by the sound of bones as he found them underneath the family house.[ http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/serial_killers/notorious/dahmer/14.html/index.html
] They may have simply been a “play” thing to him, like the animal bones. His father, Lionel, was scarcely around when Jeffrey was growing up due to work commitments, and the mother battled with depression and other psychological problems. d) Dahmer’s lack of being able to form relationships with people throughout his life had a social influence on him. This could have been determined by the lack of attention he had growing up, however he had free will, as no one made him commit the murders. The fact that as a child he was “thrilled” by animal bones found under the house meant that from a psychodynamic perspective, he associated the death of the animal with something he found to be exciting. Therefore, he found the thought of something dead

From then all the way until his last arrest in 1991 his life was filled with secret killings and homosexual relationships which led to multiple killing. The one that stands out most of all is his final killing of a fourteen year old boy named Konerak. This one is the most insane of all because it could have been prevented if it were not for the drugs that Mr. Dahmer slipped his victim. He would have been caught immediately, had the symptoms of the chemical Dahmer gave his victim been more apparent to the common observer. The drugs used made his victim seem more intoxicated then under the influence of a narcotic. As Konerak attempted to run, police came across him naked making little sense when talking, so it was believed the boy was merely intoxicated. Upon Dahmer´s request they returned him to his care, claiming the boy was his nineteen year old homosexual lover. Later the police would find out the mistake they had made.…

In the story, Jeffrey was described as a person who seemed inviting and friendly, but in reality was not. One of his victims, Traci, shows this very clearly. On page five, it states“‘I was in the mall when Jeffrey Dahmer showed up and asked if I wanted to have a party,’ Traci said, exhaling a cloud of smoke. ‘We all knew him from around the neighborhood. There was no way to guess he was a maniac. He was just an ordinary guy.…

Jeffrey Dahmer, the killer of mostly blacks, and mostly gays, started his thirteen year murdering rampage by killing the first of his seventeen victims in 1978 (Wright and Hensley 78). As it was discovered many years later in his small apartment in Milwaukee, his gruesome behavior towards his first victim would be replicated many times over (78). Jeffrey was not very popular in high school. He played the clarinet, tennis, and wrote for the school paper. He also had a history of alcohol abuse, which will continue for the rest of life. A classmate recalls Jeffrey drinking cups of scotch at his desk. Though unpopular, he was known for a lot of pranks including bleating like a sheep, shouting out things at strange times, and faking epileptic fits. In addition around age fourteen, his compulsions in regard to necrophilia and murder began. Dahmer claims that, “around age fourteen or fifteen, I started to have obsessive thoughts of violence intermingled with sex.” Throughout high school, he continued to collect dead animals. Jeffrey remembers in ninth grade during a biology class, “…we had the usual dissection of a fetal pig. I took that ham and kept the skeleton and I just started branching out to dogs,…

What makes people do inexplicable, terrible, socially unacceptable acts of violence? This question brings to mind the age old psychological theory, Nature vs. Nurture. Are people born predisposed for violence? Is there something genetically different about serial killers and murderers? Can their behavior be explained by a difference in their very make-up? Or are they made violent by seeing violence, having un-supportive and demanding parents, being mentally, sexually, and physically abused? Nature vs. nurture is one of the most sought after answers in the field of psychology and may never be “answered” but can be “understood” I feel study in the minds of serial killers has helped to define exactly what nature vs. nurture really means.…
