Self-awareness is not very complicated to understand. “Self-awareness is the capacity for introspection and the ability to recognize oneself as an individual separate from the environment and other individuals”. (Self-Awareness) As I will be explaining self-awareness throughout this essay it will be based on when one is off course. You may ask, “When is that?” That is when you realize that nothing that was planned out is being accomplished. You must first begin by accepting the responsibility for creating your own dreams and goals, which will give purpose and direction to your life. There are many times I have been off course myself and I found myself farther and farther from my dreams each year. Everyone as a child has been asked when they grow up what they want to be. I wanted to be a professional basketball player; I tore my ACL and had to find a new dream. I have come to realize that problems in life will make you more aware of whom you are so that you can develop physically, mentally and spiritually. Since becoming a college student, I have developed a completely different self-awareness. “He who is afraid of doing too much, always does too little.” (German) I find myself off course even though I know why I wanted to come back to school. I was lucky enough to have been provided a great CPD teacher, who is a counselor as well. He is very direct with what he teaches. He makes it easy to understand the material and gives us great advice on how it will help us throughout our life, if we wish. He taught me that even despite all the efforts, I can easily fall off course and I have as I am developing my self-awareness. The important part of that is actually catching myself doing so right away. I can either start blaming or complaining but how will that help? I must find the habits that sabotage my success. “By the time we are adults, we have learned many… rules of behaviors and have practiced those rules so much they are second nature to us…” (Matsumoto and Juang qtd. Downing 185). The first step in taking responsibility for your own life is developing self-awareness. My dream and goal now is to become a registered nurse one day. I have a passion to help others and I believe this career will help me complete my mission in life. Any time you feel you are off course remind yourself why you are in college. Your self-awareness will kick in allowing you to see your emotions, behavior, and personality so you can make changes that will put you back on the correct path. This isn’t learned from reading a book. Being unaware of your thoughts, emotions, words, and behavior, will make it difficult to become successful in your dreams and goals.
