Even being physically present in class, I was not mentally present. I was totally lost in my other world so I had no idea of what teacher talked about. Later, I asked my classmate about the homework and he told me that, we have to write an essay, of the chapter which the teacher has discussed in class. As I was totally absent minded I had no idea of what the homework is about, and hence I could not complete my homework. In this way I was influenced by psychological noise.

Listening and hearing are two steps in communication. These two words do not have the same meaning but both are important to have effective communication. Hearing occurs when a person’s ear picks up sound waves and then transmits the message to the brain. Listening is the second part of this process and is an active process. An active listener evaluates the message before responding, and they are thinking of a response as the speaker relays a message to them. Listeners thought speed is much faster than the speaking speed, which could result in a delay between the two processes and could lead to daydreaming and not listening (Porter, 1969).To overcome day dreaming, a listener must concentrate on the message do that they may become an active listener and be successful in the communication process. I have heard, “When you are talking, you are not listening.” I did not understand what that saying meant until reading the text…

I have learned many interesting things about myself as a communicator, thinks to taking the Interpersonal Communication’s class. I will discuss what I have learned about myself and my strengths and weakness. During the first week of class I learned that Noise was anything that interferes with or distorts communication. I also learned that Noise could be Physical– External / Physical – Outside the speaker or listener (see – hear – feel – smell, etc.) Physiological – Internal / Physical – Hearing problems, speech problems, etc. Psychological – Internal / Mental – Thoughts, Biases, Worries, Self-talk. Semantic – Words / Language / Meaning. I learned that Physiological Noise is a major issue for me because I suffer from hearing loss, which tends to affect my ability to communicate with others.…

To communicate effectively with one another, you must first understand some of the barriers that prevent us from doing so in our interactions. Bevan & Sole (2014) state that, “the fundamental purpose of human communication is to allow people to generate and share their thoughts, feelings, experiences, beliefs, opinions, or really anything they can think to express” (Chapter 1.1). However, there are many types of distractions, called noise, that prevent us from fully sharing these messages with each other. Physical noise is, obviously, external in form, such as a cell phone going off or other conversations around you. This type of distraction can interfere with our concentration on the conversation.
