Social norms are the customary rules that govern behavior in groups and societies, and if one chooses to violate these norms various things will happen. Some examples of social norms can be simple and some more complex but the simplest form can leave the most impact. To test the outcome of breaking social norms, I had to think of norms that would be easily broken and safe for me to conduct. As I thought these ten crossed my mind: • Locking eyes with someone in a grocery aisle • Have an animated conversation with yourself in public • Wear your clothes backwards • Ask strangers if you can cut in line. If they ask why, state you don’t feel like waiting in line.…
From the clothes we wear to the rules we follow, we tend to stick to our norms and traditional beliefs. In our society today, people are expected to keep a socially accepting ways of life. We develop norms, which is a rule or guideline regarding what kinds of behavior are acceptable within a culture. People often feel the need to “fit in” to the group they are affiliated with, even if they see a behavior that is different from what they normally do. To study such behaviors when norms are violated in a society, breaching experiments can be used.…
Peter Ustinov once said, “In America, through pressure of conformity, there is freedom of choice, but nothing to choose from.” This is unbelievably true as much as we try not to admit it. Society has made it where we really don’t have a choice when it comes to certain things if we want to be “normal” and liked. Although we might say we would act differently than everyone else in a hypothetical situation, when it comes down to it, we would more than likely just follow along with the behavior of everyone else. This is just whom we are as individuals- how we are wired. We don’t want to risk standing out and being ridiculed or singled out. Sure, we want to be unique and remembered,…
I am not that social so this was a challenging project for me. I knew what my violation would be, it would be at least a little uncomfortable. Except for driving the speed limit. That “norm violation,” I do daily and get all kinds of reactions, adds entertainment to the fun of driving. Anyways, I chose to go to a Walmart which I don’t normally go to, and stood in line backwards. My three different trips to Walmart resulted in strange behavior from the audience.…
Giving up a seat to an elderly on a bus, sitting down in your seat silently when the teacher enters the room, and even going to sleep at night and waking up in the morning are all social norms. We might not recognize it, but we follow social norms in our day-to-day activities constantly. Social norms are society-based beliefs on what is acceptable and unacceptable in our society. Breaking a social norm usually leads to confusion or disapproval. It might not be against the legal law but it might be against the social law. Therefore, for my experiment, I decided to break a social norm by bursting out in song on the shuttle to school. My song of choice was I Believe I Can Fly by R. Kelly.…
Harry Patel 9/03/2008 Sociology 101, section 8 Social Norms: Conformity and Deviance One of the norms I broke was talking to someone in a public bathroom, while peeing. It was very ocward talking to the guy next to me. One of the reason I felt ocward talking to him was because, you are not suppose to talk to the guy next to you. While you are doing your business you look at the wall in front of you. When you are done you wash your hands, and leave. No one talks to anyone they don’t know, even if they do know the person next to them they won’t talk to them while they are peeing. No one was taught to do this, you learned by observing. But when the guy next to you starts talking you don’t know how to react. That’s how the guy next to me reacted. First of all this field stimulation took place in AMC Theater bathroom, right after the movie Eagle Eye finished. My prediction before starting the field stimulation was that no one will talk to me and pretend they didn’t hear me. When I enter the bathroom there were few people in the bathroom all the urinal were full because I had to do the field stimulation I waited for one of the urinals to open up. While I was waiting for the urinals to open up I didn’t want to do the field stimulation. The reason I didn’t want to do it was because there were lots of people in the bathroom, and I didn’t want anyone to get mad at me. One of the guy finished and stepped away from the urinal washed his hand and, like what you are suppose, to do he didn’t talk to anyone. I walked over to the open urinal and started doing my business. The guy next to me was done and walked away, right when I got there. This guy in his late 20’s started using the urinal next to me. I didn’t know what to say at first. I was thinking about just saying Hi. I couldn’t get myself to say it, but finally very scared and nervous I said hi. I don’t know if he heard me or not, but he didn’t say anything. So I got even more nervous. I said it even louder hi. He gave me a…
Have you ever been to a wedding and just felt completely confused because one of the female guests decided she was going to wear a wedding gown of her own to someone else 's wedding? Wouldn 't it be weird if one day, you walked into one of your discussion classes to find that your cool, hip, macho male T.A. just all of a sudden decided that to put on make-up, wear fake rubber breasts, and dress like a female to teach his class? Is this normal? What exactly is normal and who is to define what is normal and what is not? Norms, as defined by Schaefer 's Seventh Edition Sociology text, are standards of behavior that are maintained by society. However, there are several types of norms, in which all act upon its distinctive ways. Informal norms, however, are behaviors that are maintained by society that are generally understood, but not precisely recorded. The wedding gown and the macho, but very pretty T.A. were both examples of informal norms. There are no specific punishments for the awkward behavior of these two people. However, a few might confront the bride and tell her she is being disrespectful or the T.A. 's students might ridicule him, calling him…
After this experiment, I founded that, when people are put out of there norms, they become very uncomfortable, and uneasy. Both of the participants claimed they thought I was strange to stand close to them and it made them very uncomfortable. I don’t think most people think about these norms but only unit they are broken or violated. I don’t many people realize how important norms are and how much of an impact they can make on a society. In this specific norm, I believe it is important because it is respecting the individual by not violating his or hers personal space. It is a sign of respect and acknowledgement. Social norms are important because they can bring a society together by following these norms. People know what is right and…
Norms are an element of culture, and all societies have unique social norms that encourage people to act in particular ways. Often times we follow these norms without even thinking about them, and sometimes may not even realize that they exist. The purpose of this assignment is to encourage students to think about the role of social norms in society by conducting a social experiment: violation of a social norm.…
Most people would agree that elevators are somewhat uncomfortable places. First, there are too many people crowded into a small space. Most people try to maintain personal boundaries, but quickly realize that their neighbor is often closer to them than they would like. Second, we were raised to think that talking to strangers is a horrible act that would inevitably place one in harm's way. Therefore, elevators seem to embody a monastic vow of silence. Conversations on elevators are perfunctory and usually carried out quickly in politeness. It is my belief that when a person is in this uncomfortable situation, they would rather say nothing or pretend nothing ever happened than…
Social norms are rules of certain kind of behavior that society uses to evaluate the population and provides normalcy. When it comes to responding to the breaking of social norms people have different ways to cope or react to it. Some reactions can be pleasant, some could be horrible or even judgmental. Some people believe breaking a social norm could be needed to help govern or control the society. On the other hand others believe breaking social norms are un-normal and that no one should break those rules. There are so many social norms that sometimes it feels impossible not to break any. Many social norms like walking on the wrong side of the sidewalk, talking to yourself in public, or even not wearing the same clothes everyone else thinks is cool could be a tremendous norm broken in today’s young society. An everyday norm would be wearing a clean shirt, but when you break that norm by not wearing a clean shirt, it was a drastic shock to the people that are stuck in the societies mold. What if wearing a stained shirt was the normal thing to do for a certain person or group of persons? Are the people stuck in societies mold wrong for thinking their norm is correct? There really is no wrong or right answer to those questions because my normal way of looking at things may not be the same as the next persons.…
The social problem the researchers are addressing in this article is the excessive alcohol use that occurs on college campus’. This topic relates directly to family studies because this is a problem that has been going on for decades across college campus’ and has not changed. According to Wechsler and Nelson, this problem has not been adequately addressed and the current prevention and intervention techniques are not working (As cited in, Champion, Lewis, & Myers, 2015). Aside from drinking on college campus’ the researchers look into other factors the play a part in the problem. They look at the social norms theory which has been shown to be a predictor of college drinking. The theory examines…
Conformity is a social psychological phenomenon that occurs in humans’ everyday lives, but oftentimes goes unrecognized. Through psychological studies such as Milgram’s prisoner experiment, psychologists even discovered that in some situations social pressures exert such strong pressures on conformity that people will go to extreme lengths when under its influence. Prominent examples of conformity include the pressure people have to wear similar types of clothing, language pressure that results in people using the same types of slang, and even the music and food people eat can occur as a means of conforming to social norms.…

When you go to a mall or to the airport, people would use escalators to get from one floor to another. Escalator is such a common thing in today’s society and there are social norms afflicted with it. Everyone is expected to go up or down the same way as the escalator and those that don’t, people will question their actions. For my experiment I wanted to see how people would react if this social norm of going the right way on the escalator was violated. From what I have studied about norms and roles in society, I assumed that people around would become irritated and outraged at us.…
