Stud earrings include a stud, made out of metal, precious or semi- precious stone, plastic, glass, swarovski, wood, etc. This is the only part visible from the front, which gives the earring it's typical "floating" look, as it hides the pierced part of the earlobe. This part is attached to a post which goes through the pierced part. The post itself is being held by a holder- a fixture on the other side, which might be screwed onto it, or otherwise holding the post in place.
