CHAPTER 14 PROTECTION DEVICES

14.0 Protection Earth PE – Earth-Leakage Protection

All chassis and enclosures for the electric equipment must be grounded. Neutral and safety ground must be connected at only one point and must be at the main service entrance. Improper earth protection will lead to certain hazards such as:

A) Hazard due to stray impedance.

B) Hazard due to direct contact

14.1 Fuse and Circuit Breaker

A) Fuse

Fuse is used to protect electrical devices and conductors from excessive current which arises from short circuits or overload current. Its enclosure is made from certain type of material. Fibre is popularly used because of its tough resistance to arcs, its mechanical strength and its excellent insulating properties. Higher operating voltage needs long lasting fuses.

14.2 Motor Protection with Fuses

Fuse alone does not protect electrical motors efficiently. It only serves as a short -circuit protection. In most cases, time-lag fuses are applied to release current of which depends upon the value of the starting current of the machine.

Fuse does not provide any protection in the following cases:-

a) Overload due to continuous operation.
b) High operating frequency of the machine.
c) Failure of an outer conductor in three-phase system.
d) Under voltage or over voltage.
e) Variation of frequency.
f) External heating, e.g.

This product must be grounded. If the E35 s electrical system should malfunction or breakdown grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current, reducing the risk of electric shock. This product is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. DANGER - Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. Check with a qualified electrician or serviceman if you are in doubt as to whether the product is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug provided with the product if it will not fit the outlet; have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. This product is for use on a nominal 110-volt circuit, and has a grounding plug that looks like the plug illustrated below. A temporary adapter that looks like the adapter illustrated below may be used to connect this plug to a 2-pole receptacle as shown below if a…

We learned that Although houses today often contain circuit breakers rather than fuses, fuses are still around. A fuse contains a thin strip of wire, somewhat like the thin iron wire in our experiment. The current that goes to appliances must also pass through this strip of wire. And that If a short circuit occurs—or even if too many appliances get hooked up to one wire, so that too much current flows—the wire in the fuse heats up quickly and melts, breaking the circuit and preventing a fire from breaking out. But what is a short circuit? A short circuit is a device, an electrical circuit of lower resistance than that of a normal circuit, typically resulting from the unintended contact of components and consequent accidental diversion of the…
