Protagonist Party: A Narrative Fiction
I had just walked in the back door from playing in the enormous yard behind our house, when I suddenly see my mother and father hunched over, whispering. Accidentally getting mud all over my skirt while outside, I stayed quiet so my mother wouldn’t see. I could tell they weren’t discussing anything happy, because my mother had worry lines plastered on her forehead. Even the feeling in the room was grim, the normally bright blue couch looking like rainy gray skies. But the telltale sign that something was terribly wrong was that my father’s eyes were as dull as murky water.
Neither of my parents noticed me standing at the door, so I listened to the hushed whispers that barely carried across the room. Mama and Papa have told me to not listen to others conversations, as it’s rude.

They did not have our consent to tax us and therefore cannot. But they did. Most of us agree it was unconstitutional,” My father said. “Well what do we do? Mary and I love playing with our paper dolls. Please don’t take them away!” I exclaimed. I might be a bit old for dolls, however Mary, my five year old sister, was in love with them and played with them everyday.
“So every piece of paper we use, we are taxed. But even though the amount is relatively small, the total will build up over time,” my father says, although he seemed as if it was to assure himself more than my mother and me.
“Will we have enough money for food? What about clothes? Oh no, papa. Mary can’t find out,” I worried. I didn't know how this would turn out. I hope there won’t be a war. Then papa might have to fight. I couldn’t even think about losing him. But papa stopped my train of thought, “Oh no. You mustn’t tell Mary. She is much too young for this kind of burden. But tell her to take care of her dolls, lest they break,” he said quickly. I nodded and promised him I wouldn’t tell. He and mama gave me quick kisses on my forehead and I padded towards my bedroom

My father had disappeared before my birth, and my mother never mentioned a single thing about him. Whenever she mentioned him, she did so out of spite and resentment. My mother and I lived happily together, singing and laughing at the things Grover’s Corners had for us. As I grew up, however, my mother changed from the sweet, kind person I had known to a cynical old woman who smoked cigarettes constantly. The mother I used to sing church hymns with had long disappeared, replaced by a vicious woman who considered her son as nothing more than a hindrance.…

Tom wondered for what seemed to be the millionth time why Dectives were required to dress like wall-street bankers or stock analysts. At least that was the expectation in public, however the moment he had the office to himself, he unknotted his tie, slipped off the linen suit jacket, and undid the top button of his shirt, then sat back in his chair, raised his eyes to the ceiling, and tapped the tip of a ballpoint pen against his teeth. That was Tom's usual mode of concentration and contemplation, and so intent was the man's focus on the new case that all else slipped from his mind, even the recollection that he'd texted his wife. Therefore, the sudden familiar sound of her voice, accompanied by the enticing aroma of barbecue, startled him, and he immediately shot upright. The sight of Lila elicited a smile that only widened with the greeting and kiss. "Sorry baby."…

Not long ago, the British government increased their taxes upon us. The British Parliament decided, on March 22, 1765 to institute a tax on all paper products that we purchase from England, and the tax went into effect on November 1, 1765. This tax money will be used to pay for defending us in the colonies, so they say. Most of my fellow colonists would argue that this tax is unfair because colonial legislatures did not provide approval of the measure. We in the colonies, are forced to buy products from England. My family discussed this issue.…

As I sat there, playing, the door suddenly banged open. My mom stood there anxiously with fear in her chocolaty eyes. I knew something tragic had occurred for she never came home early. She grabbed my forearms and pulled me up with a jolt and snatched a plastic bag from the corner and stuffed what little clothes and toys I had in it. My own brown eyes were filled with tears, but I didn’t let them fall. She dragged me along as she moved and on her way out, she shut the door with a thunderous bang. Who would have thought that that was the last day I would ever see that little one room garage house again.…
