Self-driving cars work by using an “internal map of their surroundings, based on a wide array of sensors, like radar, along with other sensors to construct their internal map.” So basically self-driving cars work buy using a maps to help you get to your location and also use sensors to detect when next to other cars or pedestrians.

But what about the negative effect of them, in pittsburgh they have introduced a self-driving car, uber company. “self-driving research and technology is here developing and doing real-world testing in the double black diamond of cities: Pittsburgh.” So there has already been testing of this, working for uber. Wait, with these self-driving cars, there is no real need for people to work for uber. So does these people lose their jobs? Also what if the technology rolls over to tractor trailers and trucks, would delivery men and truck drivers lose their job as well? These are questions no one really has the answers for, which is one of the reasons this in not a world wide thing. Along with the people potentially losing their jobs, i’m certain these cars would more expensive than a normal car, regular cars are already expensive enough for most americans, I don't see there being a market for self driving cars at this point.
So in conclusion, self-driving cars in my opinion would do more bad than good for today's society. Yes they would eliminate driver error, make roads safer and reduce carbon footprints, but Along with those benefits.
