Over the past 30 years, many social psychologists have been critical of the practice of using incentive systems in business, education, and other applied settings. The concern is that money, high grades, prizes, and even praise may be effective in getting people to perform an activity but performance and interest are maintained only so long as the reward keeps coming. Once the reward is withdrawn, the concern is that individuals will enjoy the activity less, perform at a lower level, and spend less time on the task. The claim is that rewards destroy people's intrinsic motivation. Widely accepted, this view has been enormously influential and

In this quote Pink cites a behavioral science textbook to prove his claim, “People use rewards to gain the benefit of increasing another person’s motivation and behavior, but in so doing, they often incur the unintentional and hidden cost of undermining that person’s intrinsic motivation toward the activity” (Pink 37). The science textbook explains that people often think others are motivated by rewards, but in the end the intrinsic drive always prevails and counteracts with that notion. Pink also states that, “Over and over again they discovered that extrinsic rewards—in particular, contingent, expected, “if-then” rewards—snuffed out the third drive” (Pink 37). This proves that the idea of expected rewards/punishments brings out the intrinsic motivation in people, and makes the activity seem more like a job, and less of an…

“An incentive is simply a means of urging people to do more of a good thing and less of a bad thing.” This quote from Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner explains why incentives are used in modern society. They are present to motivate someone to make a decision, whether it be a positive or negative one. Many times the average person thinks of an incentive as a term they are not familiar with, or that they don’t use on a daily basis. However, people everywhere use incentives on a daily basis to get what they want, whether they realize it or not.…

Dave Pink’s Ted Talk reminded me of Ivan Pavlov’s conditional reflex theory; I believe sometimes in order to get a person motivated to do something, an incentive must be presented. We learn at a young age to have extrinsic motivation (if you did chores, you would get an allowance; if you got A’s in school, we would get rewarded; and so on and so forth). Growing up, I was never motivated by intrinsic motivation, I wasn’t personally rewarded by doing chores; I was motivated by the allowance. While in the military, my division was extrinsically motivated; we worked harder and faster to get off of work sooner than other divisions. We knew that once we completed the work, we would be off of work.…

Edward Deci performed an experiment to test individual’s motivation. Deci had two different groups assemble Soma pieces. One group was paid and the other was not (Motivation 2.0). Deci’s experiment showed that on the second day the group that was being paid showed less interest than the group that was not paid. Then on the third day, he told the group he had paid previously that they would not be getting paid. Deci then noticed that the group was even less interested in the Soma pieces than before. What can be learned here is that human motivation is intrigued by reward. Someone will become more interested in something if they are…

Organizations that rely on external rewards and punishments do so at their peril. In two separate studies, psychologists Harry Harlow and Edward Deci found that external motivations negativelyimpacted performance for non-routine tasks. Although Harlow and Deci’s results were robust, they were controversial and ignored.…

Building a car is no simple task, as shown in this video of how a Ford Mustang is made from start to finish. The process of assembling a car is one that requires a large amount of both human and material resources. This video shows every subassembly, bolt, and piece of metal that is used in creating the resulting product, a Ford Mustang. Even though one part or one person seems insignificant, one loose bolt or missing screw can result in disastrous results. This causes trouble not only for the employees of the assembly line, but for the company and everybody associated with it. Therefore, throughout the video, each and every step that takes place in creating the finished product is as important as the next.…
