Pros And Cons Of Being An Auditory Learner
Living in a single parent home affected my ability to perform well in school. My mother barely finished school. She was not highly educated. When I was younger and needed help with my homework, she was unable to assist me. This motivated me and made me even eager to learn. I started catching on to things really quick by listening and doing a lot of hands on activities. This is when I realized I was more of a hands on person. I went to several different grade schools and two different high schools due to unstable living arrangements. This made it even harder for me to stay focused and catch on. Every school learning style was different. Every time I became comfortable in my environment and familiar with my teachers we would relocate. This confused …show more content…
After reading Dewar and Wittington (2000), I discovered that I’m an extrovert learner. The pros of being an Auditory learner are very similar with the pros of being an extrovert learner. They both consist of remembering voices and faces, having the ability to develop thinking and writing skills and understanding spoken instructions better than others. They also have similar cons like having difficulty comprehending written literature without the capability of reading aloud, having a short attention span and having to continuously reread things to get a full understanding. Although, I’m an auditory learner and Capella is online I still have many advantages. I have the advantage of rereading my material out loud as much as I like. I don’t have to worry about disturbing others because I’m in my own study space. By visually interpreting my material I will be successful at developing better thinking and writing skills. The online environment gives me more freedom to be myself, learn at my own pace and comfortably in my own environment. By being able to comprehend better by reading aloud this will be one of my many advantages as a Capella online learner. This can really contribute to my success at Capella. The disadvantage associated with being an Auditory learner is having a short attention span. I easily become bored. This will be difficult for me throughout my journey at Capella. If unable …show more content…

Well, I can now say after reading last week's article by Hass and Flower and this weeks Penrose and Geisler's which was about how important rhetorical reading is and can help understand what you are reading, has opened my eyes to that fact that these are only part of why I have trouble with writing. As I reflect on past writing assignments, I now see it could have been due to my lack of experiences within certain rhetorical situations. Now that I have advanced my education and have gained additional experience on how to approach writing differently, my style of writing seems to flow better, and has become less intimidating. Which has lead to fewer sentence fragments; consistent grammar and being less critical, this has helped me, become a more knowledgeable writer. I can now say I am more like Roger and less like Janet because I now can connect the texts I am reading with real world events or things that have happened within my own life. Ultimately, I have now found that being a more experienced student has helped me improve how to read between the lines and not read just to paraphrase, it has also helped me write a better structured, more comprehensive, and well-organized essay using better examples. The important part of these readings…

Auditory Learners and their piece to the puzzle on one style of learning. It’s about going hands on. Remembering a picture in your head or possibly reading aloud because you feel like you are going to learn faster then reading silently. Will this type of learning style help an online college student? It would seem that an auditory learner would have to change or alter their learning style based upon this method of delivery.…

I have not had writing experience since I came to the United States of America. Before coming to U.S. I graduated from high school in my country in a different system and language. After I moved to U.S. I decided to attend in a college to improve my education level. Although I passed the replacement test in Thomas Nelson Community College by writing an essay which was not much acceptable for college level, I succeeded in ENF1. ENF1 was challenging for me because of weak vocabulary and writing skills. I mostly interested in science subjects such as; math, physics, and chemistry it should be another reason I am not good in writing.…

As a writer, I believe I have several strengths as well as challenges. Beginning with my strengths, I believe I have a passion for writing. When I write I make it easy to follow my train of thought from simple word selection to more complex thoughts. I also have my topics organized in a pattern designed for an easy flow from start to finish of what is written. While I strive to keep it simple, sometimes I have to get creative to capture and keep my readers attention. For my challenges, I believe my limited vocabulary may be a problem along with thoughts that do not convey any useful information. In order to improve my writing skills, I have to read, re-read, and re-read again to make sure I stick to the topic at hand.…

The Writing Journey Revision is the act of revising, it is to correct, edit and redraft. When I begin to revise a paper, first I reread what I wrote then afterwards, I read it aloud, the human mind won’t necessarily point out the mistakes because the brain will correct what you read and implement it to what needs to be there. Depending on the topic or the importance of the paper, I’ll ask around for help, or sometimes I would ask a friend to edit my paper to point out my mistakes and learn from them. Ever since 8th grade I pushed myself to convert to an improved writer through the art of literature.…

I always loved school, and I was a fast learner. I was praised for my accomplishments at an early age and I believe that the satisfaction I gained from impressing others was motivation that impacted my future. I continued to do the best I could in school. My mother was very strict and tough on me when reviewing my work, ripping my essays if I wrote in sloppy handwriting and erasing all of my math problems if I got more than one wrong. It was emotionally difficult but I eventually toughened up, and her training made me a more diligent student. The only motivation I would have was the praise I would receive for amazing scores on my work. Eventually, I stopped being praised and it was devastating for me. I entered middle school and I continued…

I’ve always felt that writing was one of my stronger points but it has been many years since I’ve had to do any academic writing. I’m mostly concerned about my grammar; I have forgotten the proper places for comas and semicolons. The ability to get my thoughts together in the proper order are also a concern for me. When it comes to reading, I’ve always struggled. I have a hard time remembering what I read, sometimes it’s as if I’m just seeing the words and not retaining anything.…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…

Writing in journals for class or writing stories for entertainment proved to be great fun. The writing level of elementary and middle school was easy to learn and work with. Arriving in high school, I felt confident in my writing skills. High school level writing proved to be more challenging. After English I, I felt unprepared for the rest of my high school writing experience. I grew to become uninterested in writing for the next two years. I procrastinated finishing any writing assignment I was given. Though I received decent grades on my assignments, I could have received better grades had I not procrastinated writing my assignments. My attitude toward writing has changed from disinterested to excited with my Composition I and II classes. I have learned much in the first semester of this course and I have grown to enjoy writing again because of this…

When walking into my first period class as high schooler, I pictured myself as a well-rounded writer. My impression suddenly changed after a few weeks in Ms. Giroux’s class. As I received my first ECQ grade with a blood-inked C written in the corner, I realized I was going to have to put a lot more effort into my writing. I began to spend more time and put tedious details in my writing while doing deep revisions after my paper was complete. Towards the beginning of the year, my writing lacked creativity and organization skills.…
