Do athletes genuinely deserve piles of money just by playing a game when a person is running a country or saving lives? Many professional athlete acquires millions of dollars. Some people believe that these athletes have unfair salaries. Athletes are overpaid that the amount they receive is just unfair. Furthermore, they’re obtaining stacks money than people who saves lives similar to a surgeon which seems unfair. They don’t even achieve close to the amount of money athletes retrieve. In the other hand, about athletes getting overpaid, the writer, “Jesse Edelman”, writes,” The President of the United States - who run the entire country - didn’t make that much.”(Pg.24). To explain, it seems unfair that athletes receive an aggrandized amount of money than the president of the USA. The article “Do Professional Athletes get Paid too much Money” is written by Mihir Bhagat a senior analyst. Bhagat believes professional athletes make too much money. In his article he explains the amount of money someone is paid should be based on the economic importance and value of the job for society (1). I believe professional athletes are overpaid. These athletes are making millions of dollars to have fun and play. They are getting paid to do what elementary kids do every day. Professional athletes are should be paid about sixty to ninety thousand a year. The reason I say this much is because they are at a professional level and have worked hard to get to that status. In theory, professional athletes are overpaid because the U.S. is more focused on entertainment value in today's society, rather than important issues like employment or cancer. First, the commissioner for all the sports should lower all of the salary caps for the players. Next, all of the athletes should be placed on a merit system. Meaning if the athlete is making 12 million dollars and there performance or statistics (such as shooting percentage, rebounding, or rushing yards), decrease by 20% or more, that athlete should have a pay cut. Also, when the athlete performs and does what he or she was employed to do, the athlete should be considered for a raise. Then, once this has been accomplished, the athlete will have worked for his paycheck and appreciate the hard work and dedication that he or she has committed. One summer in July in the city of Copperas Cove, Texas, I was just getting off of my $5.65 an hour job at Blockbuster Video. I sat down to watch television with my niece. I got the remote and turned the TV to ESPN. I watched 18-year old Lebron James accepts a 90 million dollar contract from Nike. As a result of this, I believe professional athletes are overpaid and should be paid at least 60 thousand a year starting off.…

There is great controversy regarding professional athletes and their salaries. People think that many athletes receive obscene salaries, but I think that they deserve that money. They work incredibly hard, they are part of the advancement of the human race, and they generate large sums of revenue for their organizations. I do not think that talented, well deserving athletes are overpaid.…

The sport industry is one of the largest industries in the United States, meaning it brings in the most revenue. But, aren’t the players actually the ones bringing the money in? The spectators are paying a big amount of money for their tickets and not to mention paying even more on foods, drinks and sporting attire. Since athletes are bringing in almost $11 billion a year, it is only fair to pay them. Being a part of such a large industry, people expect athletes to perform as professional athletes do. High expectations mean athletes have to be committed and willing to put in the long time consuming hours and hard work. This is an all day everyday commitment that leaves you with no free time or anytime at all to go out and get a job so that you can support yourself. People say it is only fair that college athletes get paid so that they can make a living and support their self.…

On the other hand, Roberto Hinojosa, a high school math teacher, disagrees with that statement. Roberto believes professional athletes are overpaid as compared to the salaries of public service workers, such as police officers, fire fighters, and teachers. Individuals such as these lay their lives on the line daily, and teachers motivate students towards higher learning as well as guiding willing students towards helping themselves to acquire the knowledge they need to know to become productive adults. All of these public servants are paid a great deal less, over the life span of their career. Salaries for a teacher average $50,950 a year, a police officer, $50, 512 per year, and a lead firefighter, $57,000 per year, as compared to a football player earning $32.4 million per year.…

Athlete are paid large amount of money, from my own view sound unreasonable. Come to think of it, sports like baseball, basket, football and soccer spend a lot of money on hiring of their players for example the “New York Yankees outspend all other baseball teams in terms of payroll. Alex Rodriguez to say, the Yankees’ third baseman, is the highest paid player in the history of baseball, earning $33 million for the 2009 season. Notably, the $33 million is only a base salary, and does not take into account any performance-based bonuses Rodriguez may receive for achieving certain offensive statistics or milestones during the season, or rewarding him for making the All-Star team”.…

Professional athletes are often rewarded extremely substantial amounts of money and lucrative endorsement deals. Many people argue that their salaries should be reduced to smaller amounts of money. Male athletes are one of the most highly paid people in the world. Athletes are some of the most talented people, but are they worth the millions that they are paid I do believe athletes don’t deserve the millions of dollars they make for what they do. I believe that all athletes are being overpaid just based off their entertainment. I have always been a huge sports fan, but athletes don’t deserve the money other people do to deserve it. “Professional athletes are making too much money in a society where salaries and wages are traditionally based on the value of one’s work.” (Do Professional Athletes Get Paid Too Much Money?) In the modern’s society, a person will be paid more than a million if their job is economically important. For example, a teacher’s profession is important because our world’s economic system relies on the education of its youth. However, teachers are getting paid less than the average professional athlete. Another occupation would be a doctor, which is also an important work economically, yet he or she makes $140,000 a year! A professional athlete does not play a vital role in our economy as teachers or doctors, but their salaries reflect otherwise. These games are played for fun not for million dollars!…

Today, many sports stars and entertainers make million of dollars every year. The advertising and commercialization of sport brings enormous profits not only to the athlete and entertainers, but also to many other organization involved in the sport business. Sport is overemphasized in the U.S and our young generation should have a chance to choose between other professions which are equally paid.…
