Problem 2.

Below is a project WBS with cost apportioned by percents. If the total project cost is estimated to be $600,000, what are the estimated costs for the following deliverables?

a.Design?$240,000 = 40% * $600,000
b.Programming?$120,000 = 20% * $600,000
c.In-house testing?$240,000 = 40% * $600,000

What weaknesses are inherent in this estimating approach?

a.If total cost estimate is off, all other costs will be off. b.The breakdown of the project in terms of its components and subcomponents must be very similar to past projects for so that historical percentages may be used. c.Requires accurate historical data.

Problem 3.

a.The original organizational chart for Adelphi Technologies is shown below:

b.A project management position is created under the business manager for Product A, and other new hires will be assigned to engineering and marketing departments within this business unit. The Project Manager serves as a focal point for this Government contract. For finance, legal, and accounting functions, the project manager will interface, on a matrix basis, with the VP of operations or his/her staff.

This approach will have limited impact on the original organizational chart.

c.Since the modification will involve both Product A and Product B, we will move the Project Manager one level up on the organizational chart. This is a matrix format. The Project Manager will have the necessary authority to complete the Government contract. This approach still has limited impacts on the original organizational chart. The traditional Product A and Product B maintain the same chain-of-command as before. However, dual reporting is required for the project team members working on the Government contract.

For finance, legal, and accounting functions, the project manager will interface, on a matrix basis,

d.Since Products A and B have engineering and marketing overlap with Product C, the engineering and marketing resources must be in the same unit; otherwise, there will be duplicate work. The same goes for marketing resources. In this case, the marketing department will have product managers for each of the products. These product managers will work in a matrix relationship (not shown on the figure) with the corresponding engineering teams.
