The Olympics were revived in 1896 thanks to Pierre de Coubertin. Since its reemergence in 1896, the modern Olympic movement has been shaped and influenced politically through the tensions between countries, economically through financial gain opportunity, and socially by promoting women’s rights. Another document I would like to have seen would be one containing a record of third world countries that have attended the Olympics. This document would have shown how wealth effects and shapes the modern Olympics.…

When a city decides to host the Olympics, as London plans to in the summer of 2012, it should be well aware of the huge and lasting economic impact that will inevitably take place. It is important to remember that there are both costs and benefits of hosting the Olympics. Under these terms, it seems only right to consider the effects the Games will have on the local economy as well as the wider reaching finances of the organizing committee.…

The Olympics being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this year has been questioned and considered a global issue as some common viruses along with several other issues are present at that time. It is essential for the competing Olympians to train, eat clean food and stay healthy in order to perform at their highest potential. Viruses such as the Zika virus are currently being transmitted in Brazil through mosquito bites. This is an issue as it poses a threat to everyone in close range of the mosquitos including the Olympians and the hosts of the event. However, an advantage of the Olympics being held in Rio is that it is bringing money into Brazil and making a public attraction. Individually, I have always had a passion for helping out those with mental disabilities. The main avenue I try to apply this passion is through the Special Olympics. I have volunteered throughout high school and every year the experience seems to become more rewarding. Upon arriving to the games, each volunteer student is assigned a "buddy" to escort to all the events and activities throughout the day. Both of the buddies that I have had the privilege of escorting in high school (Taylor and Jason) were amazing individuals to be around. Perhaps the best part of the day is first meeting your buddy and seeing the look of pure joy in their eyes of making new friend. This passion is unconditional as the buddies do not care about the volunteers’…

With the Olympic games being held in Sydney this year, I wondered if perhaps the performance of the economy was being affected in part by the fiscal stimulus provided by Olympic construction in Sydney and other parts of the country. Australia's economy has been performing well recently, suggesting that there might be some effect. Over the last five years, growth in Australia's gross domestic product has averaged 4.35%, almost a full point above it's thirty year annual average of 3.5%, and the unemployment rate is near a ten year low. According to one estimate, the Olympics will tack on an additional six and a half billion dollars, about 1.6% of the GDP, to Australia's GDP over the 1994-2000 period. A natural question to ask is if this growth is due primarily to the Olympic preparation, or if, instead, it is a result of some other change in policy, or perhaps just plain old luck.…

Before I begin my paper I wanted to give a little history on the background of the Special Olympics. The first International Special Olympics Games were held at Soldier Field in Chicago 1968. It was originally started by a woman named Anne McGlone Burke, who was a physical education teacher with the Chicago Park school district. She began with the idea for a one-time Olympic-style athletic competition for people with special needs. Burke then contacted Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who was the head of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation to fund the event. Mrs. Shriver loved the idea and encouraged Ms. Burke to expand on the idea and the JPK Foundation gave a grant of $25,000. More than 1,000 athletes from all over the United States and Canada participated in the first game. At that game Mrs. Shriver announced the formation of the Special Olympics and it has continued to grow from there. (Http://specialolympics.org)…
