The water budgets of Berkeley, Ca., and Terre Haute, In., are greatly affected by their respective geographies, topographies, climates and populations. Though they are located in similar latitudes of the planet, the previously mentioned aspects affect their water budget in different and compounding ways.
As classified by the Koppen Letter Code System, Berkeley falls in the Csa category, which is a mild, mid-latitude Mediterranean climate (Hess, 2013). These climates are referred to as dry summer subtropical, but are more generally described as Mediterranean climates. These types of climates are characterized by clear skies and sunshine in summer months, mild winter temperatures and hot summers, and rain primarily during winter season from the mid-latitude cyclone. Extreme summer aridity is caused by the sinking air of the subtropical highs and may exist for up to 5 months. Locations of Mediterranean climates in North America are from Portland, Oregon to all of California (www.eoearth.com). The average temperature of the coldest month is less than 18°C (64°F) but above -3°C (27°F). The wettest winter month has about 3 times more precipitation when compared to the driest summer month. Precipitation in driest summer month is less than 40 mm (1.6 in.). Warmest month has average temperature above 22°C (72°F) and at least 4 months have average temperatures above 10°C (50°F).
