Sonny faced many problems in his life, he was struggling to overcome his Heroin addiction, also he was kind of confused about what he wants to do in his life. I believe those kids were raised in a black neighborhood where there are many issues that will hold up their future like drugs, violence, and racism. So when he talked about darkness it seems he was referring to the darkness of their future and what they may end up with later on, just like Sonny, which made me remember the children of my country. When you see them full of hop and try to tell you about their dreams you just feel sorry for them, because I know their dreams are hard or even impossible to be achieved. Because they leave in a place where you get valued based on your last name, your wealth, and connections. Where the poor need to stay poor and riche will be riche.
