Since it seems like the universities and NCAA are unwilling to examine their case college athletes are taking matters into their own hands. At a Northwestern University, a Division I college in Chicago, these players became tired of not receiving any compensation aside from their scholarships and they made a decision that made the NCAA realize they were serious. They were aware that suing for compensation could be a losing battle they took the next step. What these players decided the best thing to do was unionize in a way similar to employees and demand the rights that they deserve. After their coach told them that they were unable to do this they took the issue to the National Labor Relations Board (NLBR) and what happened next was a giant…

An athletic administrator there are many student-athlete issues that will arise that athletic directors will need to be prepared for. The first issues I think that an athletic director would need to prepare to face are issues regarding the code of conduct. In conjunction with the school’s code of conduct, the athletics department code of conduct should be familiarized by all student-athletes and parents. All student-athletes should be accountable for his/her actions and should be enforced by the school principal and the athletic director. An athletics orientation will be held before the start of each academic school year stressing the importance of the school and athletics code of conduct. Athletic orientation should include the student-athlete and parents that will cover expectations, rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements, which lead me to my next issue that athletic directors may face.…

Today, sports are no longer just fun and games, sports are now a business, and college sports are no different. College sports provide a huge source of universities’ income. The school takes in money from ticket sales, television contracts, and sport-related merchandise, just to name a few. With these sources of great revenue, comes the feeling of a “professionalization” of college athletics and in turn college athletes. The line between college athletes as Student-Athletes and college athletes as Athlete-Students has continued to blur, causing some major issues to arise with regards to athletics and academics. Some of the most primary issues currently affecting NCAA athletes are: academic support, the NBA age rule, eligibility and scholarships, and the academic progress rate (APR).…

College athletics provide a way for a lot of students to pay for a college education. These athletes work hard at their selected sport in order to keep the scholarships. Regardless of all this hard work, these athletes have nothing to show for it. A percentage of the athletes are black and come from poor inner city community where their families struggle to keep the bills paid and to keep food on the table. These black athletes are being taught at an early age that their education plays a back seat role to the glamour and money of professional sports. Black athletes are recruited by colleges not to pursue an education but to fill the stands and generate money for colleges and universities. These athletes perform at games and deserve some of the revenues for the services that they provide. A lot of money is being generated from college athletics. Many different businesses, organizations, and people benefit from this money…

Did you ever realize that in most of the cases numerous of athletes never graduate? It is sad to see young student athletes setting for much less education than they deserve. Neil H.Petrie in his essay is expressing himself against the attitude toward student athletes, and collegiate system. Petrie said "the system uses and then discards after the final buzzer." I found it true because there is so much pressure on athletes that it compromises their potential and academic careers. Petrie addresses his essay to several audiences. The primary aim of Petrie's audiences, which mainly are: teachers, counselors, and coaches is to provide a professional help for students so they could get a good education.…

Becoming an athlete, let alone a college athlete, is not a path paved in gold. There are times you will be doubted, challenged, and cast aside. There will be mornings you are awake before the sun rises. There will be nights you cry yourself to sleep. You will push your body to points where it will fail. In fact, you might be blindsided by an injury that ends it all. There will be coaches that will give you a false sense of security or flat out lie to you, and there will be coaches that change your life. Your teammates might be your newest family, or they might be your worst enemy. This path is not for the fate of heart and there are no promises. But at the end of the day, if given the choice to do it all over again, any athlete will agree…

    Amateur Student Athletes

Recently there has been a lot of talk, media coverage and debate about The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and the athletes involved. The NCAA defines itself as a non for profit, voluntary association that regulates the organization and wellbeing of college student-athletes, made up of over 1,200 colleges and universities (McCormick., McCormick, 2006). I will later argue that the NCAA does not accurately fit this definition as they do not care for the wellbeing of their ‘student-athletes’ as much as they care for the revenue and profit that college sports, especially Division I Football, brings in years after year. This is due to the lack of care for their football players individually as well as the creation of the term ‘amateur,…

Do student athletes make the most of their opportunity to obtain a post-secondary education? Do they have the same academic success as those students that are not athletes? Are student athletes just “dumb jocks?” The answers to these questions might surprise you. Much research has been done to dispel the myth that athletes going to college are only there to play sports with little regard to their education. Programs have been created to assure that colleges and universities hold athletes to the same standards as the everyday student. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has decided that the “magic number” to put the “student” back into “student-athlete” is 925 (Hamilton).…
