Are more expensive because
of the number of managers

Streamlining
Streamlining involves removing one or more layers
middle managers

Streamlining can:

üImprove communication

üEmpower the remaining workers if they are given

extra responsibilities

XResult in a loss of experienced, skilled managers

XBe costly initially in terms of redundancy and training

Organizational Structure
• There is no absolute “right” way to structure a
business

–Must use structure that suits it best

• Factors involved in success of business

–Type of business

–Strategy of company

–Target Market

–Style of management

Organizational Structure
• Goal- Search for
organizational structure
that will bring the
company’s moving parts
together in a wellcoordinated, efficient, and
effective unit

–Important choice because the
right groupings of people allow
the company’s mission and
vision to be met

Advantages of Current Org
• Specialization- focus on own
work

• Accountability- someone is
responsible for each section

• Clarity- everyone knows
everyone’s roles

• Serves local needs

• Effective communication
between firm and local customers

Disadvantages
• SILO:

• Closed communication
within each function

• Departments can become
resistant to change

• Coordination may take too
long

• Large gap between top and
bottom (SO WHAT?)

• Potential conflict between
local and central management

• Lack of efficient distribution
of resources
