III. Fundamental Principles of Educational Management


Educational institutions are hastily increasing in number mainly because of population. Therefore, there is a need for the educational managers to be well – equipped in different principles of educational management for efficiency and effectiveness in the educational system.

The purpose of educational management is to enable the right pupils to receive the right education from the right teachers, at a cost within the means of the state, which will enable pupils to profit by their learning. (Graham Balfour).

In the field of administration and supervision, principle is accepted as a fundamental truth. Principle may be considered a law, a doctrine, a policy or a deep-seated belief which governs the conduct of various types of human endeavour. For the administrator or supervisor, a principle when it is understood and accepted, serves in important ways to guide someone’s reflective thinking and choice of activities. In administration and supervision, an accepted principle becomes part of one’s general philosophy which serves to determine and evaluate its educational objectives, attitudes, practices, and outcomes.

Management in general is not condensed to one of his hypostasis, the “single-member leadership” in the setting of modern organizations, leadership is the work of a group of leaders, charged with responsibility in various sectors and in relative to different groups of people.

Nwaham (2008) says supervision of instruction plays a vital role at assisting, guiding and stimulating the teachers to improve on their teaching skills and experience as well as enhance their professional growth. Supervision, according to Retting (2007), provides opportunities for teachers to be groomed through a discursive critical study of classroom interaction. Also, Osakwe (2010) sees supervision as the facility of professional assistance and guidance geared towards the success of effective teaching and learning to teachers and students in the school system. Therefore, the principals should adopt methods, principles and functions that are essential to achieve educational goals.

A. Principles of Educational Management and Supervision

1. Democratic
If school administration and supervision are to be democratic, some reconstruction in thinking and practice must be made. Democratic school administration recognizes individual differences, respect one’s personality, and extend considerations to all. 2. Cooperative

Administration or supervision is a cooperative undertaking in which everyone participates to the best of his abilities through the interactive process on the belief that those who must abode by administrative and supervisory policies should participate in making them. Good results are produced when unity in action, coordination in movement and harmony in thinking prevails. 3. Effective and scientific

Scientific administration and supervision stem from the idea that the improvement of instruction may be based upon measurable and controllable data. Both administration and supervision make use of the scientific principle that the solution of a problem should be based on facts. 4. Based on accepted educational philosophy

A philosophy is a background of theory, knowledge and beliefs which explains and justifies a selected way of life. The evolution of administrative and supervisory activities should be influenced by one’s educational philosophy. How the school should be administered and supervised depends upon the educational philosophy of the administrator and supervisor. 5. Creative...
