Princess Diana

The loss of the beloved Princess Diana was one that saddened countless people world wide, although nearly everyone was affected in some way by this tragedy, some handled it with more sympathy and caution than others. Some were blood relatives of the princess, some had only briefly known her, some had never met her in their lives but still felt that they had lost a loved one, there were even people who didn’t know much about her or her life at all, regardless of anyone’s unique relationship with the Princess everyone was affected in some way. There were many articles written and speeches given directly after the death, but not one was exactly like another. The way that each specific person spoke of the passing of the princess had a lot to do with their location in the world, how well they did or did not know the Princess, and how much respect they had for the situation and the people involved. Immediately after the car accident that killed the Princess there was a news report released that listed the details of the crash, commentary from members of the family, and briefly spoke of the possible cause of the crash. This news article was written to inform the people of England of what had happened and fill them in on what little information was available to the public at that time. The speaker or the author of this article affects the text slightly but it is mostly factual evidence, not very much bias is shown through this piece of writing. One indication that the speaker did in fact affect the text in one way or another is the statement “While it was not time for recriminations there was no doubt the press had played a part in her death” even though the author left it at that brief statement, it is understood that the author knows that it is too soon to be pointing fingers at who caused the tragedy, but rather focus on the loss of a wonderful woman. The audience affected the content of this article greatly, the purpose of this paper was to inform the people, without the citizens urge for immediate information there would be no need for this article to be written. When the author gives direct quotes from the family, such as “The queen and the Prince of Wales were ‘deeply shocked and distressed’” it is obvious that the audience has an impact over the writing. The fact that that the author inserts specific quotes into the passage for the audiences benefit works in his or her favor in this type of literature because the audience is who they strive to draw in. The subject of this article affects the text the most significantly in this case; the author is expected to write with more sympathy and compassion than normal, given the topic and circumstances. When the author wrote “Hundreds of mourners have gathered at the Princesses London home” it is evident that the subject of the article is influencing the writing greatly. This news article was extremely affective in delivering the facts and some personal information and leaving it at that. Some may argue that the article was too impersonal but in this case that may have been the best possible way to go. Although this article is considered more factual than anything, there were many that were extremely personal and opinionated.

Weeks after the accident Queen Elizabeth gave a televised speech to address what happened, bring light to some positive memories of the Princess and to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and words. The speaker, being her mother in law, had a huge impact on the textual content of the passage. When she says “I admire and respect her, for her energy and commitment to others” it is quite obvious that she was very found of the princess and that shows in her speech. The fact that she has such love for the Princess brought a very sentimental feel to the speech and touched many of the other people who felt the same way for her.
