President Obama’s 2014 State of the Union Address (excerpt) analysis This speech is written and told by Barack Obama, the president of the United States. The speech was told in the White House, the 28th January 2014. The State of Union Address is a speech told every January by the president. The speech is a non-fiction text, because it contains facts. The speech contains both facts about how well America stands and which goals they already had reached. His purpose was to inform all people of America about what they have achieved during the year and what they should accomplish the year to come. President Obama speaks to the American population on behalf of the whole chamber, which is seen in this quotation: “Tonight, this chamber speaks with one voice to the people we represent: it is you, our citizens, who make the state of our union strong.” The target is all off the American people, the farmers, entrepreneurs, autoworkers, teachers, doctors and so on. The speech appears in online-examples of the text on the internet, and it has probably also been sent live in the television. This is how it got out to so many Americans. There are many examples of The American dream in the speech; President Obama says for example “Opportunity is who we are. And the defining project of our generation is to restore that promise.” And he continues with the words: “The bottom line is, Michelle and I want every child to have the chance this country gave us. But we know our opportunity agenda won’t be complete – and too many young people entering the work force today will see the American Dream as an empty promise – unless we do more to make sure of economic honors the dignity of work and hard work pays off for every single American. He uses repetition in the speech, for example on page 19 line 8, and page 20 line 24 he says ‘’I believe’’, when he says it, it makes people think that he really believes in what he says.
