1.Presentation:
1.1.The text under consideration is entitled "The Gift of the Magi". It`s functions to show us the main idea of this text and also it tells us about the practice of giving Christmas presents in the first place? The magi, at least according to the Christian tradition. According to the Christian Bible, the magi were the trio of kings who traveled to Bethlehem from somewhere in the east to deliver three presents to the baby Jesus. According to the story, the magi were wise folks. The gifts the magi gave to Jesus must have been wise too. These gifts must have been the smartest, best gifts anyone could have chosen. And according to the narrator, that makes the two characters in this story – Jim and Della – just like the magi: they gave each other the wisest gifts of all.
O. Henry is one of the most famous American short story writers. O. Henry’s real name was William Sydney Porter and he was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on September 11, 1862. At age of 20 he moved to Texas. He married Athol Estes in 1887; they had a son and a daughter. O. Henry's short stories are famous for their surprise endings and humor. O. Henry's wrote such classic short stories as The Ransom of Red Chief, “The Gift of the Magi” and “The Furnished Room”, “The Romance of A Busy Broker”. 1.2. If to talk about the functional style "The Gift of the Magi" is a short story, that belongs to the belletristic. The substyle is emotive prose.
1.3. The genre is epic. The subgenre is a novel.
1.4. The theme: The two main characters in "Gift of the Magi" are a husband and wife who give up their most precious possessions to be able to afford gifts for each other on Christmas Eve.
1.5.Idea: The idea of this text is the self-sacrifice and poorness
1.6. Character sketch:
Della is the character the story follows, and she's a woman with a mission: finding her beloved husband the perfect Christmas present. She's the character with whom we most identify. We suffer with her

    The allusion to the Magi seems inappropriate at first to the reader. For, after all, the Magi were a select sect of hereditary priesthood who had extraordinary religious knowledge and their gifts were of great monetary value, intended to suggest great respect and devotion.
