Ms. Spaziano Allusion of Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare has been thought for centuries to be the greatest writer from his time. He is known for his plays and poems but perhaps most famously for his tragic love story Romeo and Juliet. Many adaptations of this play have been created but nothing close to the original. Through out the play there are many figures and allusions that are present in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet such as Echo. The Greek mythological figure, Echo, is an important allusion in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet because her story emphasizes Romeos selfish nature which is part of his tragic flaw. Romeos selfish nature is related to a youth by the name of Narcissus. He was a beautiful creature loved by many but Narcissus loved no one. He enjoyed attention, praise, and envy just like Romeo from Romeo and Juliet. In Narcissus’ eyes nobody matched him and he considered none were worthy of him. Echo was a Greek nymph who lived on the slopes of Mt. Helicon (in Boeotia). She was extremely talkative and continually chattered away. A goddess named Hera eventually grew exasperated and ordained that Echo could only speak when spoken to. Also, the nymph could only repeat the last syllables of whatever words people spoke. Later, Echo fell in love with the handsome, conceited youth Narcissus, who rejected her which shows the greediness and selfish side of Narcissus. (Nardon pg. 88) The allusion of Echo mainly shows the relationship between Romeo and Narcissus both being extremely selfish. The allusion discusses when Juliet told Romeo to go home, “To lure this tassel-gentle back again bondage is hoarse, and may not speak aloud, Else would I tear the cave where Echo lies, And make her airy tongue more hoarse than mine, With repetition of “My Romeo!”(Act 2, Scene 2, lines 162-166). In this part of when Romeo estranged Juliet, she makes a reference to Echo a mythical creature, which was ridiculed by Narcissus and she was so sad that she repeated his name and people believe you can still hear the “echo” of her calling his name in caves. Both Romeo and Narcissus act before they think which makes them impulsive and selfish for choosing them selfs over others. In conclusion, Romeos never ending thoughts about he and Juliet ending up together compare to Echo’s non stop babble. Her desire to talk and chat about anything parallels Romeo’s constant desire to figure out he and Juliet’s relationship. In the end, their persistence, one with love and the other with conversation, ended any chance they had to be with someone.

This passage was said by Lady Capulet in the third scene of the book. William Shakespeare uses a ton of metaphors throughout the book and this passage is no exception. Lady Capulet uses many examples to describe the scenario with a book of love to the unbound lover. I really liked Romeo and Juliet because of the amount of irony and foreshadowing in the text. For instance, Romeo says “I dreamt my lady came and found me dead. And breathed such life with kisses in my lips”(V.i.6-9). This is an obvious example of foreshadowing to the upcoming scene where Juliet believes that Romeo is dead, and tries to take the poison from his lips. This quote is also a reference to Mercutio’s Queen Mab speech about how dreamers usually see what they want to see in dreams. I like this quote because it relates something from the past to the future through the present and connects everything together. Another thing that I liked was the amount of irony, which is present in Romeo’s choices from the very beginning of the novel where he firsts states that he is in love with Rosaline by saying “that the all-seeing sun ne’er saw her match since the world first begun”(I.iii.99-100). In this scene we find Romeo pining for Rosaline and saying that there is no one in the world more beautiful than her in the world; but then he somehow instantaneously gets over her after seeing Juliet, where he states that he has “ne’er saw true beauty till this night” (I.v.60). ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is a play wherein laid a tragedy, written by Shakespeare featuring two star cross’d lover. Despite the fact that it's suppose to be a love story, the prologue, written in the form of a sonnet, emits a heavy, sombre atmosphere and foreshadows the rest of the play, focusing on the negative aspects of love and outlining the tragic outcome of such an emotion – rejecting the idea that love overcomes all that the typical love story undertakes. The sonnet contains alternate rhyming couplets and an iambic pentameter which would provide comfort for the Elizabethan audience as they would find familiarity in such a rhythm. It sets forth a scene of dramatic irony for the characters as Romeo and Juliet is oblivious to the consequences of their simple love when the audience themselves had been enlightened. The sonnet began with informing us that the play would be about ‘two households, both alike in dignity’ which meant that they are both similar in terms of their high status and noble birth. Perhaps this would appeal to the Elizabethan audience as humans usually take joy in higher beings' fall from grace. The phrase ‘ancient grudge’ implies that their adversity of the other were so old that the reason for their hatred had already been forgotten – they’re only now fighting for the sake of it. This increases the play’s tragedy as the ‘children’s end’, which emphasis on their innocent youth, could’ve been avoided if not for the two households fruitless affray.…
